The term "Rand" refers to Witwatersrand where all the gold diamond and financing was controlled in the late 1800' and early 1900's.
The lord's were the fsk-off rich okes who pretty much owned all of that and "shaped" Joburg
My great grandfather owned most of Towerby, Kenilworth and such in the south... Sadly he also had like 11 kids so the inheritance poof :-P

Correct. The name came long before the currency did (1961). Ninja Edit. Google:
Witwatersrand ("White Waters Ridge"), the 56-kilometer-long geological ridge where South Africa's massive gold deposits were discovered in 1886, giving birth to the city of Johannesburg. "Rand" is the Afrikaans and Dutch word for "ridge" or "edge".

Wow. I grew up in that general area. My paternal great grandfather was an old gin pirate and at one time owned the Nugget Hotel. Family legend is he lost it in a high-stakes card game. Other side of the family were Greek immigrants into Hillbrow community and I have hobbas of cousins. (Grandmother was the youngest of 13 and when she stopped spawning at #7 was looked down upon by her brothers and sisters)
...so I've also got less than no chance at any Randlord inheritance either
