Hi everyone,

I want to find out if other South Africans, who emigrated from South Africa in the middle of a tax year, experienced trouble submitting their taxes (presumably your last tax return).

When I open the eFiling wizard, I get the Form Wizard for Non-Resident, but no employer, investments and other related information. From March 2025 - August 2025, I was a SA tax resident and worked a job till the day before leaving ZAF. After obtaining documentation proving my tax residency in Canada, I submitted my RAV01 together with other documents. SARS sent back a letter confirming that I am no longer a SA tax resident.

Interestingly, when I use the "3rd Party Certificate Search" feature, I can find my employment, medical aid, banking data, and other certificates that were issued in the 2026 tax year. I suspect what could be happening here is the Non-Resident Wizard cannot load the information SARS already has about me because my tax residency status changed in the middle of the tax year. This most likely means I that I need to fill everything out manually. I have submitted an online query to SARS about this issue.

For the cynical folk, I know that many expats don't bother sorting out their tax affairs in South Africa. I still want to take care of this so I don't face unexpected surprises. I am a law abiding citizen after all. I know that I could call a tax practitioner who can probably sort all of this out for me, but, I am too frugal for such things.

I want to know if others who left ZAF also faced the same troubles with the eFiling site.

Yes that has been customary... but lately SARS are making a big deal about it. And I'd worry because they do talk to other tax authorities. SARS gets really butthurt when taxpayers leave SA so

Yes this true.

The Common Reporting Standard that many countries are signatories, does allow for different tax authorities to exchange information with each other. However, one could argue that such authorities dont know what they dont know. Why go after the average joe when you can chase high net worth individuals who may owe millions of dollars in unpaid taxes.
