Plug-in Chinese cars are flooding into South Africa

Slash all taxes and import duties on EV's. We need to wean the public off fuel based cars as petrol has become literally unaffordable for many. Will you wait until R100 per litre before buying an EV?

Eskom created the demon that will consume it. installing Solar and running that electric car for free is a win-0win proposition. If the consumer has what it takes to push back, municipalities and Eskom may just find themselves fighting for every cent they get.

On the contrary, most people who need an EV for a daily commute won't be charging it from solar. Unless they invest in extra batteries. I get around it because I only commute to work twice a day (but it is a 120km round trip), so the car charges on alternative days. If I didn't, I would need quite a bit more battery storage.

EVs are a fantastic boon for Eskom which has to power down its turbines at night. If people switched to EVs en masse, they can run their stations at higher utilisation and make more money.

I have avoided EV's till now but am starting to look at it to reduce costs, if I do, paying for a solar set up and using that to charge the EV's is a given. Not everyone can afford it, but it just seems to make sense to me.

Not to mention in some cases, like me for instance, where I live alone and travel rarely or only for short distances around the city, the 40kWh+ battery in a R350K EV with Vehicle-to-Load functionality respresents +-R100K in solar storage batteries you don't need to buy if you hook it up correctly and add a bit of smart management so the car IS the storage (current 5kWh battery can be the buffer when unhooking).... I will also then be able to go literal days without needing to charge said batteries (cloudy/rainy weeks etc.)

So now that R350K EV is more like R250K.... and that's new pricing.

Problem is the car is the inverter too and in some cases limited to 3kW.

That's why you still have your normal inverter and battery.
The car just becomes the grid load, or another grid load so none of that matters.
I'm 100% sure there are clever ways to make this work just fine by people who know more than me.

Probably with V2G and bidirectional DC charger integrated into home inverter which would bypass cars AC inverter. Not sure how one would parallel home inverter with V2L car inverter.

I don't know whether there are chargers that can switch over to v2l automatically, nor whether the car supports it.

I would rather just get more home batteries.

I swear MyBroadband writers sit around and copy news from SkyNews - only days later!

This stuff is exactly why I've already mentally prepared that one day, my next car will be an EV.
Figuring that out and setting a smart and efficient system like this that works would be utterly baller.

I think EVs will be the solution to the massive storage requirements renewables will need so we can get away from gas power plants. Just need the grid utility to play ball.

haibo! cadres must eat mos!

if EVs really start to take over the ANC will tax it MORE, not less
