a friend of mine has a machine - as slow as treacle running down a cold cobblestone road.

booting the laptop takes about 15 minutes - normal or safe mode.
to start any other task / application takes another 15mins or so , then forever to complete.

my initial thought were hard drive / ram problems.
running etrecheck (took about 2hrs), shows no "no major issues".

in over 20yrs using macs, i have never seen anything like this - any bright ideas a to what may be going on here ?

Which mac is it? age? spec?

Sounds like an SSD/storage problem but it could be a few things. Generally for health issues though it would be picked-up. I assume he's tried a re-install to see if that clears it?

As the others have said, there is no point speculating anything unless you say what model Macbook this is and which specs it has.

Macbooks have been around for years, and the old Intel ones can be slow as ass.

My guess is it's a 2010 Macbook air with 64Gb SSD and 4Gb RAM and has too many things installed.

That sounds like the hdd is failing or perhaps ram but that normally would not just slow the machine down you'd also get errors/glitches
