10-year driver’s licences coming to South Africa

The Department of Transport has presented its proposed amendments to the Road Traffic Act, which looks to increase driver's licence validity from 5 to 10 years.

How much will it cost, I assume it's valid for twice as long so it will be twice the price plus a generous overhead.

Eish. The relevant part for those due to renew soon:

Until the proposed legal amendments are implemented, motorists will be required to continue renewing their licence cards every 5 years.

The DoT will now be required to undertake a Parliamentary public participation and consultation process on the published amendments.

Following this, stakeholder comments will be incorporated, and the DoT will resubmit to Cabinet for final approval to be officially incorporated into Road Traffic Regulations.

So hurry up and wait. Hoping they can resolve this before my card expires next March but not holding my breath.
