Wow, interesting article. Earlier this year, I had a 1-day work trip to the Eskom peaking plant at Atlantis. I should have stayed another day to explore the town and its surroundings. I enjoyed driving there along the coastal road and back to the airport via the highway (N7). A lot has changed since the early 2000s, when I had a flat at the then-new Parklands.

Funny, here by me i have a set of screwdrivers, given out by the biggest industry in Atlantis in the 1970's and 1980's, Atlantis Diesel, who were the only engine manufacturer of truck engines during sanctions, who made millions of diesel truck engines, based on an older Mercedes diesel, that powered many thousands of trucks in the country and surrounding nations, and which are still seen on the roads to this day, because, while they are not your modern Euro spec 6 diesel, they will absolutely run on anything that is vaguely liquid and will burn, like cooking oil, old engine oil mixed with paraffin, and pretty much anything that you can pump into he injector pump and get to flow. they run really well on Jet A1 as well, but still can give some power even on light bunker fuel, provided the tank is not too cold. You see them in old MB trucks, all over 50 years old, that are all small operators, doing sand, stone, rubble and small building works.
