This is a question for Cape Town locals.

For anyone not wanting to spend their life in Cape Town peak traffic, which are the best suburbs to look to live in if you're A) working in the CBD, and B) Not a millionaire.

As a related question, are real families finding MyCiti buses as viable alternatives to head into the CBD faster than taking a car? The network is impressive but I am not sure how the adoption is.

Honestly, I would say Milnerton.. Dedicated MyCiti bus lane along marine drive makes traffic a non-issue really..

That said, I haven't lived in Milnerton for a really long time now, so I have no idea what the area is like now.. I imagine Woodbridge island is probably still pretty okay..

It is still okay, some co-workers live there.
The main issue in CT is that regardless where, the rents are insanely high. It's expensive out there my bru

Everything is forking expensive, the more outwards you more the "cheaper" it gets.

"Best" is relative as well but a good so-called middle ground might be Milnerton, Goodwood, Bothasig, Edgemead, Monte Vista.

Claremont and Rondebosch are quite quick for getting into the CBD, as you hit the M3 at UCT just as the road splits and traffic speeds up.

The evenings are a different story though. Atlantic seaboard is best for commuting against the traffic, but the reasonably priced bit doesn't apply there.

Yeah the thing is that some areas will have shorter travel times even if they are further away, due to smoother traffic flows and/or better road infrastructure along the route. Those are the gems I'm trying to pick up, but it seems Capetonians don't really bother with that based on this thread lol

Yeah look, I lived in Cape Town about ten years ago and lived in Milnerton (Royal Ascot) and that was very nice from a quality of life perspective. I needed to get onto the N1 so every day I had to drive past Century City and get onto the N1 there ... which was ok but insanely congested.

Can anyone share whether the Gauteng trick of leaving earlier at 06:00 helps one beat the peak traffic crush in Cape Town?

Yes it works.

My wife leaves home at 05h30 and is at work (Foreshore) before 06h00. Same trick works coming back, leave CBD around 15h30 and is home a little after 16h00. Traffic builds exponentially after 06h00.

We live in Table view (behind the Table Bay mall). She uses the R21.

Phew Tableview is gorgeous but that traffic is a gamble. 05:30 is a super early start but I understand why it's necessary. Thanks for confirming.

I live in southern suburbs, I have not travelled from CBD during peak hours for a long time.
Last week unfortunately I had an appointment at 4pm in CBD, left CBD exactly at 4:15pm, reached home at 6pm
So my rule from now on is leave before 3:30pm else just sit in a coffee shop and leave after 6

I've lived in Cape Town for 41 years and I'd also really like to know the answer to this question

But honestly I think you gonna need to manage expectations and just be a millionaire. Multi-millionaire actually. Either that or get yourself a car that you REALLY enjoy the interior of cause that's your new home now.

The whole market is pretty farked up for anyone who wants to actually live here and doesn't have an amazing job or daddy/mommy money.

Ok jokes aside maybe tell us what your budget actually is and we can give you some more specific feedback.
EDIT: and also how much space you need, like an apartment vs house etc.

Yeah it's hectic, I left the Cape Town's CBD at 15:10 last week and arrived at CPT Airport at 15:50 ... traffic was already heavy even that early and can just imagine it kept getting worse. That's what got me thinking about this.

I suspect it's something you just gotta experiment with, trying out different routes and times.
