Ster-Kinekor denies that photos of its new cinema at top South African mall are fake

Both images were generated or edited by Google's models. They both carry a SynthID watermark - something it can only carry if its been through an LLM.

SynthID is a technology developed by Google DeepMind that adds imperceptible digital watermarks to AI-generated content. These watermarks are embedded directly into the content and can be detected later to help identify whether content was created by an AI model. SynthID works across multiple modalities including images, audio, and video, providing a scalable approach to content provenance and authenticity verification.

SynthID is different from "AI detection platforms" in the sense that it does not give an accuracy score or something like that - it is either a 0 or 1 for if there is a watermark, or no watermark. If there is, then it is guaranteed to have passed through an LLM. While it is easy to remove the watermark, it hasn't been done in this case.

The images probably were taken on site, and then definitely passed to Gemini to edit and make them look better.

Looks fake to me. There are not people talking loudly on their phones and eating popcorn like Jesus is coming back.
This shows you've not been to a cinema in about 12 years... People talking on phones? Please people don't even have active ringtones anymore.
