Gauteng to open criminal case against student who reported a security flaw in its R269-million app

The Gauteng Department of e-Government said it intended to lodge a criminal complaint against third-year university student and cybersecurity researcher Joel Cedras.

Bonginkosi Dhlamini, MEC for e-Government told MyBroadband that it was standard practice to open a case with the police where a breach is recorded.

mmmreally? We'll just have that hang over your head for a little while, shall we?

Yet more evidence of a culture of shooting the messenger.

"No good deed goes unpunished!"

It's also Orwellian. You aren't allowed to suggest any imperfections in the system:
"thoughtcrime"—any personal or political thought that challenges the authority of the Party

“It carries highly sensitive information, including residents’ names, contact details, locations, movement histories and crime reports.”
Explain to me why movement history is kept, how long is this history kept ?

I’m having deja vu. Didn’t something very similar happen with the CoJ (?) about 10 yrs ago? Someone reported on this forum that you could get personally identifiable data by just changing the URL parameters on one of their sites and instead of fixing the problem their response was to try and prosecute the person for hacking.
