FlySafair prepares for possible driving licence ID ban

Let's hope the digital version is approved before the licence is invalidated

I suspect the digital version is still a long way off. They didnt share timelines, but the department is processing public comments on draft regulations governing the system. So you know that will take time.

Or drivers licences were never an official identity document and only an ID document is proof of ID. We know drivers licences are easily bought.

Anyway all the more reason to move to a digital ID with the card as backup

I was thinking more of the unofficial spots: collecting a parcel, or getting into a complex or secure building, where they ask for some form of identification. An ID is the default, but they’d happily accept a driver’s licence because the point was just to show you’re not some random bloke and you are who you say you are. Those places will now be far more likely to refuse a licence. Not because the law changed, or even their own policy (a legal change wouldn’t automatically carry over to a private policy anyway), but because they saw it on the news. Similar to the random places that still ask for proof of address simply because that’s how they’ve always done it.

My ID stays at home, the drivers licence stays in the car. But yes, all the more reason to go digital, as then I can 100% just take the phone with me when I am out and about.

Their airline, their choice.

FIFO in the end if they decide to do it.

Personally I do not see a problem with it, most of us do not need to show ID often enough to make the weight of carrying the card an issue.

Department of Transport’s proposal to ban the use of driving licences as a form of identification.

The Drivers License is adequate identification for traffic police but not adequate for boarding local flight?

So do I now need to show my RSA ID card + Drivers License to the traffics cops?

Agreed, unofficial use is fine - the company can decide whatever they like is proof of identity

shouldn't you already be carrying an ID book and not a Driving license when boarding a flight.
unless were already in the year 2035 where your ID is tied to your fingerprint/retina
They only need a driver's license. That's what I'm carrying.

Carrying my ID and driver's together is just asking to lose it all.

same, I used to do that but then thought its a bit risky having everything on me
knowing the blinding speed of home affairs

It is faster to get a new ID card than a new drivers license card these days, much faster.

Friend's handbag was stolen last week with both in, 2 weeks for ID through Capitec, a piece of string long weeks for drivers license.

Two decades ago my car was stolen, with my ID in the boot (in the days when drivers licences were inside ID books). That was a cluster**** to sort out. The irony was that it was an election day, so when I phoned the police, I was told they are busy guarding all the polling booths!?
had that happen before as well, car stolen outside a polling station on election day despite all the police around

In theory your biometrics should now allow you to prove your identity if you lost both/all cards, but good luck getting it sorted at a bank branch/Home Affairs or whatever...

It's pretty easy to get a new ID, all you need is your fingerprints and an affidavit stating that you lost your ID or that it was stolen.

Yea it doesn't make sense to me.

DL has more or less the same info as an ID, why is one considered a valid form and the other not, are they saying ID's cant be faked?

And if I go to some non guavament entity and they ask for ID but I hand them my DL they say they need ID, I roll my eyes, walk all the way back to the car and get my ID.

A drivers license doesn't even have your firstnames on it. It just has your initials and your surname. It has never been an acceptable form of ID for any bank or financial institution. It doesn't state your nationality or your immigration status. Frankly it's surprising that the airlines have ever considered it a valid form of ID.
