SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING | LEVEL 2

Residents are urged to take immediate precautions as the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 2 Severe Thunderstorm Warning for eThekwini and other parts of KwaZulu-Natal from 20 to 21 September.

Heavy downpours, lightning, damaging winds, hail, localised flooding, and infrastructure damage are possible.

Municipal Disaster Management and Emergency Services teams remain on high alert and ready to respond.

The public is urged to remain vigilant, monitor official weather updates, and take the necessary precautions to protect lives and property.

This weather warning remains subject to updates.

Note that a Level 2 warning is high likelihood, but minor impact (it says so on the grid). If it weren't for the recent damage, this would be a non story.

Parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been warned to brace for severe weather conditions today.

The warning is valid from Tuesday afternoon through the evening.

The South African Weather Service has issued a Yellow Level 2 alert for severe thunderstorms in the southern parts of the province, which may result in heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail and excessive lightning.

Affected areas
Senior forecaster Wiseman Dlamini says areas including eThekwini, Kostad, Richmond, uMzumbe, Harding, uMdoni, Umkhambathini, Umzimkhulu and Ixopo could be affected.

I don't particularly know about the thunderstorms, but a cold-front that passed over Cape Town early this morning (Tues 6th) is likely to move up the coast and bring a sharp change in temperatures later today:

LOL. Was just typing my response (above), when your comment popped up.

October has been a rather odd month, and yet another series of cold fronts will eventually bring extremely cold conditions to the entire southern half of SA over the next 5 days. Early model runs showed snow over the Drakensberg, but this now seems less likely. This chart shows the predicted daytime temperatures on Mon 19th:

It was, saw some beautiful lightning arcs, only 5mm of rain in Pinetown. But I see we are for more thunderstorms this afternoon/evening.

There will definitely be some rain later today in KZN, but it will be much cooler, with strong onshore southerly winds, as a cutoff-low exits to the south east:

I lived on the Bluff when I was growing up - our dining room had large panoramic windows facing the ocean, and I used to watch the MASSIVE (MyBB™️) thunderstorms & spectacular lightning shows out to sea for hours - this was in the days before SA got TV broadcasts... ;)

Representative photos taken by a school classmate (who sadly passed away a while back) - his house overlooked the Brighton Beach tidal pool...
