Goodbye Green ID Book

Both my parents are permanent residents and they got their Smart IDs last year.
directly without ever having a green ID book?

literally impossible, the current smart ID application process asks for your South African ID number ...

“Prior to 31 March 2027, the department will enable the remaining cohort of naturalised citizens and permanent residents, as well as South African citizens abroad, to also obtain smart ID cards,”

Non visa exempt countries. ...?

I am in no hurry to do this, but Google states:

Is this still a thing? How do you prove your address? I used to get printed municipal statements, but everything is electronic nowadays. Are we going to end up with tens of thousands of 'stateless' residents, who cannot prove their details?
I don't see such a requirement. HA should be the first port where you don't need proof and from then on it should permeate elsewhere. The whole thing about proving address everywhere is stupid.

I'm sitting with this pickle my grandma was born in India over 80 years ago and she is a naturalised citizen for 70 odd years. Sassa says that the pic on her green ID book is too old so they cant authenticate her and Home affairs said they cant get her a smart ID as she wasnt born in South Africa
