Year End Functions

I declined ours, 2nd year in a row. A day of peace and quiet awaits me... I don't mix with rubbish.
[those of you here who know me and what I am currently going through will understand quite well why this is necessary, it's nothing to do with me being a team player or not, it's everything to do with the dick moves, the psychological abuse and my boss being an upstanding piece of excretment]

Ours is in London’s Gherkin building in early December. I don’t normally go to these things. But I have a new motto of sorts to just say yes more often and thus I am going. Will be a late one so getting the train. Should be interesting at least.

My invitation to the last year end function before I left after more than 40 years of service wasn’t even 30 seconds old before I declined it. The person that sent out the invitation email immediately called me and said I probably chose the wrong option by declining, I can just change it to accepting it.

I told him that declining indeed was my chosen option. He asked me why’s that, whereupon I told him that company functions are very fake. Managers that screwed you over during the year now suddenly waltzes around the tables trying to solicit small talk as if you’re best buddies.

He was so taken aback and just replied “Oh” and hung up. I haven’t attended a company year end function at least for five years before I left the company. The constitution gives me freedom of association, and I choose with which colleagues I want to associate with after work. And it definitely isn’t the fake friendly management.

Why the heck is your "year end function" in late Oct? AFAIK no one does it like that.

The accepted stance is Nov (typically mid to late) till the early December window.

I've worked at venues where functions are already starting in late Aug/Sept and going into Jan. Depends where you are going, amount of people and availability. A lot of people leave the booking till the last minute and cant get slots for Oct/Nov/Dec which is prime time, so you take what you can....

I think it's possibly due to the availability of decent venues. Late November and early December the venues usually are getting to be fully booked.

You see the same with Matric Farewell functions. Previously the norm was after school break at the end of the 3rd term, early in October. My son has been commissioned to do photos and videos for many farewell functions, and lately it's now beginning middle September already, even during the school break. This is because of the limited decent venues.
