Communications minister Solly Malatsi’s plan for sport on TV spells trouble for DStv Premium

What will happen if multchoice decide to stop offering it's internet broadcast services ? Let alone springbok / protea games
It means rugby and cricket become amateur sports again. That is why SABC could show them until the 90’s.

I'm no fan of DSTV in general, but their sport coverage is excellent. Just compare the quality of any DSTV rugby broadcast with anything else from overseas and you immediately see the difference.

What I would have a problem with was if the sports codes - like rugby - have underhanded dealings with multichoice to effectively exclude other broadcasters from buying the rights, but this has not been proven to be true as far as I know. So it is a free market and anyone willing to pay the highest price gets the broadcast rights - as it should be.

The moment you start imposing non-commercial terms to this the quality will degrade. Less money for broadcast rights means less money for the teams, less money for players means more players going overseas, this means a drop in the standard locally which creates a doom loop of cheaper broadcast rights etc.

Sure - we should grow all the games and get as many people watching and participating as possible, but we also need to make sure that there is a game worth watching.

I would have preferred that the Springboks became a second tier team to deliberately degrade and cheapen the product for the benefit of the masses and that was the plan ten years ago.

We were going to play against the likes of Uruguay and Portugal instead. Then that bloody fool Erasmus came along and ruined everything. Now only the rich and corporations can afford tickets.

Just have home Springbok games on the Sports package. Everyone wins.
You were propably being sarcastic here... but just in case - they will never do it because then the Premium package will in essence be dead, I suspect a very big percantage of "premium" subscribers are rugby fans who only pay for premium to get the rugby.

I wonder how much the rugby is "worth" to dstv? Netflix / Amazon / Disney can essentially provide the equivalent of the DSTV premium package for R 100 - R 150 pm.

Anyway, to be an elite, all you need is to find someone to share your premium account with so only R400pm.

Pffft.

Take the 24 month satellite Premium contract. R799 p/m incl. access PVR & XtraView, and 2 streams = R266.34 p/m for 3.

Not sure if a mobile feed is incl. in this setup, it used to be for ordinary sat. Premium but the website info is maybe confused (quite normal for them ).
If it is included, then = R199.75 per 4 housemates.

Bonus - satellite allows a second decoder viewing environment

Disclaimer: "Housemate" is a relative term.

I didn't include this because its a 24 month commitment and people are not reliable when they are elite. I don't think the 2 streams need to be in the same house either, but yes, you are right, only R200pm to be an elite. Let the DA minister choke on that.
