Ban people in South Africa from using Temu and Shein

Maybe if Cosatu didn't actively agitate for the ridiculous labour laws that we have there would actually be some incentive for people to invest their capital into labour-intensive industries like manufacturing in South Africa. As it stands at the moment there is zero incentive to run a factory with hundreds of workers in South Africa. That is just hundreds of headaches that nobody wants or needs.
The problem is not labour laws. its that the labour laws they propose are not labour laws, but "enrich the ANC elite" laws.

If they get out of ANC politics and turned into a real labour union they might not be as despised.

Don't buy from either, but if I did and the state did do something as stupid as banning it, I would simply use a work around to bypass the state. The 'poor downtrodden masses' need to learn that they are the problem, and the reason people do not buy overpriced local goods anymore. Why would I pay more to support an illiterate that spends most of its time either striking, creating laws to confound and obstruct me or calling for me to be killed. Vote for failure, and don't cry when failure is what you get.

That's right - make consumers' lives even more expensive while enabling local retailers to continue to rip us off with their insanely high prices. Even with the customs taxes added, it is FAR cheaper to buy from Shein than locally, and the variety of choice is also much greater. If local retailers did not rip us off and provide such terrible service, no one would buy from international companies. But as usual, South African retailers prefer to whine about others rather than to improve themselves.

Labour union federation COSATU believes that blocking Chinese online shopping platforms will help protect jobs in South Africa.
This sums up the South African Government 110%.

THEY CANNOT COMPETE ON A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD.

Instead they need to squash any competition or anyone that makes them look bad (or should I say any more useless than they are).

David Lipton (then First Deputy Managing Director of the IMF) in a 2016 speech in South Africa — he said “Many South African companies enjoy very high profit margins. These are often 50% higher than the profit rates in other countries.” He made the point while criticizing protected/privileged domestic markets (example: poultry tariffs) and calling for more competition. The speech was given at Wits Business School (Johannesburg)

Offer Cosatu a 30% share in either Shein or Temu and all will be forgotten!

The only jobs it protects is the useless middlemen importing those same products and adding massive margins.
The main customer complaints appear to be that the clothing items are often poor manufacture and material quality compared with the illustrations given. Some of the products in other catagories are passable.

I have a similar experience buying clothing from Woolworths, with a similar return rate to Temu.

The problem is fast fashion, not the store it's bought from.
