Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 7

FYI we are now a Gold Google VPP, 2nd in the country. Traffic levels have increased so we suspect all the youtube complaints are around their Teraco node congesting as now a chunk coming from our PNI at ADC in JHB.

So please feedback on the youtube experience going foward.

Congratulations to you all Paul! In layman’s terms what does this gold status mean?

I remember them talking about it a while ago or how Google was implementing tier peering.

If i recall it revolves aroound depending on your level the resources you get access to from Googles side. So in otherwords the higher level you are the more Google will be willing to work with you

Yeah historically Google was an Open peer, but they have changed policy.

So now smaller networks need to use a VPP to reach Google services.

And there are different tiers to VPP and how they certify your interconnects and resilience.

PlayStation download speeds have been dreadful for me since yesterday afternoon. Averaging 19Mbps on 200Mbps Openserve in JHB regardless of game.

Speedtest on the PS5 shows full speed and ping is perfect in games with no lag or loss. Every device is fine. Restarting device, router, ONT doesn’t improve.

Is the CDN just that bad?

Hi we have our own cache in JHB, just make sure you are using our DNS servers?

Downloaded FC27 trial to test and it’s full speed so I guess the popular stuff is on the cache.

When I go back to downloading Black Myth Wukong and Road 96 both are slow.

Yeah its possible you are the first to download so its basically filling the cache. But the cache would be fetching it from regular channels.

Just tried the free Marvel Rivals which is in the Top 10 for SA downloads and it’s even worse at 15Mbps. So far only FC27 and GTA V are full speed.

So best to check you are using our DNS which would then use the cache, so if your router is set to something else your PS would use that. You can try specify 154.0.1.1 on your PS and see.

Not sure if anything can be done about this, for the past few weeks when using Eweka on usenet the speeds have been 1MB/s to 2MB/s using 30 connections.

When I enable a local vpn, the speeds hit my connection cap (60MB/s), same if I use my backup Vox account.

Below are the traces from CI, and then Vox to the ip used when downloading.
If you can gleam any insight into this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, this may be down to the host limiting based on your connecting IP.

If you try any other international service like a speedtest even what is the result?

If you mean a normal speed test on Ookla, then it it is full line speed.
Using the build-in test file on SAB shows the same 1-2MB to Eweka on CI.

I don't think it's IP related, as I made sure to check my IP was different when switching back to CI earlier.
Think it ended in .41 earlier, now it's .116

SAB?

In these sorts of situations there is very little we can do to change it without engaging with the host, which would also be a waste of time to be honest.

And there's no point in using the Afrihost NNTP server to proxy in this sort of case?
