Minister backs Indian robots to “help” teachers in South Africa

I Googled this. I found the Department of Science, Technology and Innovations YouTube video about it. I watched it.

Its a tablet glued to a mannequin. It is not a robot. The tablet even says itself it is limited to "handshakes and waves".

If you want to use AI in schools to assist kids just put a damn tablet in a classroom that has a Claude/ChatGPT/Gemini subscription. Why waste money one this thing? It has absolutely no value over what kids can already do on their phones.

Unless this Woman took an AI model and heavily trained it on the South African curriculum, history, languages etc, she should not be able to claim any sort of merit in the building of it, because from what I can tell, this is something a 10 year old could put together with their cellphone, Dads old blowup doll, and some duct tape.

Its cadre enrichment, needing to eat a bit.

Why did you google it?

That's why they say now but once they arrive we'll probably have them work the sugar fields again.
क्या आपको नहीं लगता कि यह थोड़ी असंवेदनशील और अनावश्यक बात है?... क्या इससे आप खुद को ज़्यादा समझदार या श्रेष्ठ महसूस करते हैं?

My dad always used to tell me his great-grandpa "smoked the grass and drank the cane."
Explains why I can drink a 750ml bottle of Mainstay and still stagger off to bed. Genetics is lekker in us Durban charous for drinking.

Because I was interested in the robot itself, and what sort of level we were talking (ie. Boston Dynamics vs ... whatever this thing is).

I was also hoping that I could get some clarity on why they feel the need to use a robot when there are lots of unemployed teachers, and how using robots rather than teachers could create 20 000 jobs when you could ... just hire 20 000 teachers.

At some point while reading the article, I also started to wonder if the robots were there as actual teaching aides, or if they were meant to teach kids robotics.

My dad told us that his grandfather beheaded a British soldier that was assaulting his mom and managed to escape by hopping on a ship to here......no idea if this really happened.

Man, I really wish I could read Hebrew.
