Things that irritate you - Part 4

Facebook has confirmed that the interesting post you briefly left to check something else has now gone forever, as part of its commitment to helping you discover absolutely everything except that.

The company explained that returning users to their previous position would undermine its business model by allowing them to finish doing something.

“Eighty per cent of content consumed on Facebook is viewed by someone muttering, ‘Where’s that ****ing thing gone?’” explained spokesman Simon Williams.

“That’s the sort of engagement advertisers love.”

Williams confirmed that the missing post was probably still on Facebook, although remembering its subject, author and several exact phrases would be of no practical assistance.

“You could try searching for it,” he suggested. “We’ll show you a business in Ohio with a vaguely similar name.”

He continued, “While looking for the article about your local council, you’ll encounter seventeen AI-generated babies, a woman demonstrating a potato peeler and someone you went to school with explaining why the moon is actually a weapon of mass destruction.

“Eventually, something else will catch your eye. You’ll open it, briefly answer a text, then return to discover we’ve lost that too.

“Now you’re searching for two things. That’s how growth happens.”

Facebook user Derek Matthews confirmed he had spent forty minutes searching for a post he had initially intended to spend thirty seconds reading.

“I can remember everything about it except who posted it,” he told us.

“Apparently that’s insufficient information for a company that knows exactly when I need new trousers.”

Williams dismissed suggestions that Facebook should introduce a reliable way to resume browsing.

“We already provide a Save button,” he explained. “And it works perfectly if you simply anticipate which posts you’ll want to find again before we make them disappear.”

Asked whether Facebook could at least stop refreshing the feed unless people ask for a refresh, Williams confirmed that an explanation had appeared in their feed earlier.

I took a drive this morning to the (eden)Vale. The lights around the mall have not worked in ages (I don't think I've seen them working this year): the big intersection with 5 different roads and directions is fun. At least somebody (assuming unemployed person) is a traffic director at the intersection with the BP. The return trip was a swing down Allendale Road to Kyalami Race Track to go to the strip mall nearby: also lights out that have not worked in months

So.. given all the trips I have taken lately, I am noticing a lot of traffic lights out around JHB/Ekurhuleni. I am getting confused, and treating working lights as 4way stops (hangover from loadshedding).

I doubt the voting in a few weeks will change much, at least not short term, but seriously, has everything been hollowed out so much that nobody can fix, or does nobody give a damn?

Although there's no evidence I suspect that robots are vandalized as soon as they're fixed.

Sadly IMO we're too far gone to ever catch up with infrastructure - roads, water, 'lectric..... even if we do give a damn.
