VW Polo Vivo beaten by South Africa’s most affordable electric car in almost every category

I think if fuel prices drop to pre-war levels this will change.
Also, compare resale value of both cars in 5 years time.

Electric is no doubt a major boost in economy these days due to fuel costs. But the true quality and reliability sits firmly with the VW :)

The VW Polo is very dated now. There have been a lot of cosmetic changes but the basic car is the same as it was in 2016.

South Africa's most affordable EV boasts a more powerful drivetrain, better safety, more spacious interior, and many more tech features than the country's best-selling petrol car.

The Geely is very impressive for the price, but I have 2 main issues.

1. The article refers to that car's Euro NCAP rating. Is the version sold in SA up to the same standard?

2. There are still thousands of 2010 Vivos on the road today. How many of these Geelys are expected to be running in 2032, and how easy will they be to maintain and repair?

1) VW makes you pay extra for the airbags that the Geely comes with standard. There isn't really a concern with body structure though. It is the same chassis
2) There are orders of magnitude less things to go wrong with an EV than there are with an ICE vehicle, just by design. They will last longer.

That's why you buy a 5 year old geely for next to nothing rather and not a new one.

1. I have pointed out the oddity of the Vivo 4 star rating in other threads. At least Vivos sold in SA have been NCAP tested. We have seen this problem with other models, where SA cars score worse than the same car sold in another country.

2. While EVs are simpler vehicles, there are orders of magnitude less data on long run EV use. There are orders of magnitude fewer mechanics who can fix an EV.

Depends, WW1 or WW2?
