Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 7

SAB?

In these sorts of situations there is very little we can do to change it without engaging with the host, which would also be a waste of time to be honest.

And there's no point in using the Afrihost NNTP server to proxy in this sort of case?
SABnzbd is the program.

Understandable, this happened earlier this year as well and after a few months just randomly went right again.

Maybe i'll switch to Frugal which has a local server in JHB which i know has consistent speeds.

Even better hosted at Cool Ideas so it will be fast.

That said did you try to enable pipeline and increase the connections?

Huh didn't know it was with CI.

Pipelining already enabled, and increasing made little difference as each connection was pulling around 30Kb/s

Yeah we host them at our DC.

Only thing we can try do in these scenarios is see if one of their network providers peer anywhere we do. But its often that wont make much of a difference.

Not sure if anything can be done about this, for the past few weeks when using Eweka on usenet the speeds have been 1MB/s to 2MB/s using 30 connections.

When I enable a local vpn, the speeds hit my connection cap (60MB/s), same if I use my backup Vox account.

Below are the traces from CI, and then Vox to the ip used when downloading.
If you can gleam any insight into this issue it would be greatly appreciated.

Also looks like from Eweka back to you the traffic is taking a bit of a scenic route as the forward path looks fine.

As for Vox they are sending it via Angola > Brazil.

Did you also add news.afrihost.co.za?

Yeah and the company is originally from Netherlands, so not sure why it would be hosted in Brazil.

Vox will quickly hit you with a 250ms to London is acceptable latency and also "we cannot guarantee international latency".

They have a lot of really bad routing where stuff goes via Brazil or returns via it. I know a few people who had a lot of problems with them and all moved because they not willing to make any changes

I don't use AH as they don't support SSL.

Vox is just a backup account, so only used it to test.

But today Eweka is back to line speed, so i don't know... will make a plan to switch to Frugal next time it gives issues.

Hi we have our own cache in JHB, just make sure you are using our DNS servers?

Purely hypothetical/asking for a friend:
Word on the street is a certain 210GB shipment lands at a certain cache next month. Nobody’s asking you to leak anything, break any NDAs or land a SIX-star wanted level, but if after the 12th you happened to post an utterly vague traffic graph with a line going to the moon, we’d all nod knowingly and never speak of it again.

Do it for science

I imagine they will allow pre loading before it launches so traffic will be split up a lot more than game releases -> networks suffer.

Especially since this will probably be going via Microsofts network i imagine

For PS5 it comes from Akamai and cloudfront, but with CISPs dns it all comes from their lancache.

Not sure about Xbox though.

Yeah there is a preload a couple days before. We are also deploying another cache in Cape Town prior which will split a chunk of the demand.

Most consoles can't actually TCP window scale either so even if the cache is 20ms away it has an impact.

Do you guys still have a Microsoft (MCC) cache?

I am guessing that would help you guys for the xbox side of the launch, but my guess is the PS5 demand will be a lot bigger.

When signing up for business fibre if you select payment method debit order.... Why does your invoice come through as credit card? And my invoice date is 29th and its due date is the 28th...

The first invoice is issued when the link is active, and due upon receipt, which is by default credit/cheque.
I see your product is already on Debit order though when checked the account now., so future invoices will be via Debit order.
