Warning about buying products using popular international shopping tool in South Africa

South Africans can use package-forwarding service MyUS to have products for sale on UK and US online stores that only ship within their own countries delivered locally.

However, it is essential to be aware of costs that may not be immediately evident, including courier fees and import taxes, which could exponentially increase the product's landing price.

I mean duh. He probably would've paid ~R2000 via Amazon.de (all inclusive) but as per the article would've had to have waited months. Importer of products surprised by duties and service fees... :sneaky:

Parcel forwarding service MyUS tested in 2026

FYI - there's a difference between 'tested' and 'reporting on someone elses experience'.

DHL is overpriced and adds extra nonsensical clearance charges and duties. I would rather use Aramex and deal directly with their importing service.

He could’ve just used aramex’s global shopper. Same thing. DHL is somewhat more reliable than others, at least my own experience

I’ve had far more issues with Aramex in the past compared to myUS.

1. Splitting packages for no good reason so it doubles up the shipping fee.

2. Not sticking to the pricing model I selected and just randomly selecting the faster more expensive one.

Not to mention when **** goes wrong their communication is pure ass.

They also had a subscription model which was pure nonsense to pay for if you aren’t shipping that often, not sure if that is still a thing.

Overall found MyUS far cheaper and much more reliable, also gives you far more courier options.

What I am talking about. My DHL experience has been mixed with confirmation delays. Aramex usually just shows up with their prepaid option.

Their forwarding service may be different but after sorting out their GPS which placed my suburb within another suburb no other issues. It's cheaper with duties than DHL for just the delivery. No nasty surprises if the shipper uses the correct codes and when it lands it's already pre cleared.

AGS customer service is diabolical. Hopefully one never needs to deal with them.
Nowadays, anything I don't want to lose, I send via PostBox Courier.

I agree with you. I have a legacy MyUS subscription which is basically premium without the 20% shipping discount and a 14 days free storage instead of 30.

DHL and Fedex are the most expensive couriers and are basically companies i would hesitate to use because of their pricing model

this,
surely there has to be a better way to get stuff from the 1st world into this country.

Im temped to even ask a friend of a friend to package something up and send it directly from her house.

Logistically it can never be cheaper, the further you are the higher the price.

Will stick with NYbox thanks.
How does NYbox compare against AGS or MyUS?

I really want to buy something from eBay in the US and the seller does not use the global shipping program, they can only send via USPS internationally which is a no-go as it will end up at SAPO locally, and the item will 100% be stolen by them.

I don't want to use AGS as I only read horror stories online about them, and MyUS is also not much better, so I've basically given up on the idea of ordering from eBay US.

If NYbox is not full of nonsense and don't overcharge I might give it a go.

Had a package delivered to MyUS USA address on Thursday and it's still not showing on my dashboard.

It's normally allocated in a few hours so not sure what I should do...
