Given all the experiences here, have reminded me of other things, doesn't matter if its Uber or Bolt.

  1. Most of them like to listen to an SABC radio station, and when the news comes on with the daily pro-ANC propaganda they'll turn it up. Some even comment when they talk about Ramaphosa and his BS
  2. Complain about the rate of remuneration. Hear this often
  3. Don't pay attention and many say "Hau eish, don't know the area"
  4. One I was in, was arguing with his bit on the side over the phone while taking me somewhere. I do understand enough of their language to overhear she was suspicious of him cheating. Two minutes later just before dropping me off he phones his wife and tells her "I am really busy today, lots of Ubers can't come until later":sneaky:
  5. Run red lights, don't stop for pedestrians
  6. Hoot and wave at other Uber/Bolt drivers, just like taxis
  7. I have an actual recording on my phone of me and my son being taken to his school in an Uber, with the dude blasting his Shona music (the kind with the drum machines and crescendo of million beats every 10th bar)
  8. Most of them have so many layers of Wynns' DASH on the dash, it smells like NUGGET shoe polish in the sun on a hot day
  9. Most of them have a MIL engine light that's always on, some I've seen have even thrown transmission warnings.

99% of e-hailing drivers using manual transmission vehicles have NO cooking clue how to use gears & brakes correctly - when they accelerate, they either change UP gears so quickly that they are doing 50km/h in top gear - WAY below the engine's peak power / torque curves, and they also fail miserably to change DOWN gears when going up a hill that the engine is labouring and almost stalling - and, instead of combining engine braking with the physical brakes, depress the clutch / put it in neutral and coast to a stop - only applying brakes viciously at the last moment to prevent crashing into the stationary vehicle in front of them...

the taxi, which was called by the dealership, he was so "professional", his "new" car actually was just about 10k mileage but had no brake. he used the gear to stop the car. although the under 20km travel was scary I still arrived safely. God bless. Amen.

The Ubers in SA are terrible (small, dirty, smelly, dodge). It's a completely different experience overseas.

- more recently the Uber driver clearly missed the turnoff home that would have been the quickest route from the highway, I thought no matter, the next exit isn't that much worse ... except he missed that too and took a 20min plus detour, at the very end missed the turn to the last street as well and made a u-turn into oncoming traffic when he realised his mistake, this was all with navigation on and accurately telling him what to do, mofo was not paying any attention at all
I’ve had this happen to me recently. The guy was ignoring both my directions and the gps. Kept saying his route was faster. Ended up having to do an illegal u-turn to go in the right direction.

I suspect it’s a ploy by them to make trips longer and get more money.

might well be, did you complain via the app or something?

in my case it was a ride GetWorth booked for me to get home after selling a car and the driver probably knew what's what, so there was no avenue for me to complain directly to Uber

to be fair he did also seem exhausted, like dangerously exhausted as if he pulled an all nighter or something, in the end I was glad to get home alive

Yes, I had my Uber driver pull over on the side of the highway in JHB so I could puke in front of all the oncoming traffic.
Was not a good day.

last time I was up in JHB went in a Bajaj bolt, was like a very small motorbike. with some seats.
was quite entertaining, no wonder they dont exist in WC

but bad experiences, a few I had the guys come in a different car, text me before showing up im coming in another car,
some didnt even bother just show up and its completly the wrong vehicle, say its too hard for them to register a car,

so they just grab some weird car and call it a day,

Only used black. No issues aside from the jumping of stops/lights

black is the biggest rip off ever, literally the exact same cars as everything else, just 3 times the price for the exact same car.

I mean I expect a Bentley if Im paying that much, all I get is a Polo Sedan , and they call that black..

Most bad experiences for me are crappy cars that smells like something died in it.

Never had a bad Uber trip since I don't use it much. I once had a taxi door fall off and another taxi got impounded before I reached my stop.

That's a you issue and not an uber issue
