Things that irritate you - Part 4

Complex maintenance cut my fibre line fiddling in the garden. Now sitting without fibre for a couple of days. Have my Telkom LTE as backup but it is slow at times and limited data. No streaming until the fibre is fixed. I guess I'll just read and drink coffee in the evenings now.

Why the f**k did even HDD prices go up? My ps3's one is starting to pack in so I looked online and this s**t also skyrocket.

I never took note of hdds prices since everyone's moving to SSDs now. I know AI is responsible for RAM and GPU increase but why can't they hoard SSDs and leave the old tech?

Banks of spinning disk can still be pretty fast.

just lost power ( whole area )
so we had to put our driveway gate on manual - i told everyone to put on manual - open the little black door on the motor , when the last person comes back at night - close the door

this morning at 6.30 neighbour calls me - gate wont open - i told them - open the door - they say they did and gate wont open

i go out - they repeat the procedure to show me - they open the door - press their remote - why wont gate open they ask me

I have the same in my complex. You can't fix stupid/ignorant. Nobody can do basic first principals of how does it work. There is no big dark pattern button to select to fix their problems.

The power goes out and the motor's battery runs down (get some 18Ah LifePo batteries in an external box: they last quite a while) and it's a crisis, but the same also open/close the gate a million times when power is out. Leaving the drive latch (handle) unlocked is also too much for them to figure out, and forget about people closing.

Then when power comes back, they can't figure out how to get the gate back into a state it knows whether it is opened or closed. It's really not difficult to close the gate (or at least move the magnet past the sensor) and close the latch.

Then there are the geniuses that derail the gate and jam the rail against the motor.

I think this threw them off...

But yes, when I was in a complex, this was the norm unfortunately.

I can top you though. We were replacing the gate rail, the concrete was wet, everyone was asked politely, please leave your vehicles outside at least until the evening for the concrete to set (suburb is boomed off and fairly safe). One resident, even saw me with the workers, decides, F this, I'm going in, straight over the wet concrete completely F'ing up the whole job..

Nothing a couple of cones/bricks and plank of nails/wall spikes can't fix and BIG SIGN saying "no vehicles".
I've learnt to be deliberate, because people don't like the polite "no, you shouldn't".

My favourite is when the motor's brain fries and you have to replace it (losing all the remotes). Many will be in too much of a hurry in the early morning/late afternoon to get their remote programmed (I keep a simple spreadsheet of remote ID = x unit), then cry blue murder and get iffy/entitled because how dare they lose access.

That reminds me...I should do a backup of the controller again. I have a reverse engineered backup module (see my github) for the non-Smart Centurion motors: the module is difficult to find/get and often get sold the wrong module. I should see if AI can decode the EEPROM dump (if I ever get there, I'll post to git)

We used to use an external remote module, to avoid this exact thing - but I feel your pain - people are very quick to respond if it impacts them, but don't you dare ask them for any cooperation on anything that is for communal benefit.

I was a trustee and chairman for many years, and because I always want to help, I got mentally F'ed by the role - I now own my own house, don't have to deal with all of that - and if anything breaks, I fix it immediately, and I only have one other "resident" to account to, my wife
