In the last couple of years, I have noticed that so many prominent Hollywood films are not released in SA.

For example, this year, after their trailers dropped, I was so excited to see Primetime with Robert Pattinson, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother with Mahershala Ali, and the Nathan Fielder documentary You Can See Everything.

Each of these films were highly critically acclaimed, but none of them appear to have had an SA release.

What the hell is going on?!

It's clear that movie theater attendance has been waning worldwide in the last decade or so, including in SA, but it cannot be this bad. Why does the Paw Patrol film get an SA release but not the prominent ones I mentioned above?

Are we only going to get billion-dollar blockbusters now?

These are hardly "prominent Hollywood"
Why would anyone want to big screen/popcorn these anyway?

Give me Godzilla.
A flilm doesn't need to be a billion blockbuster film for it to be prominent. Most of the films nominated at the Oscars are not huge blockbuster films.

Well the theatres that show the movies have got to know that they will make money and get bums on seats with the movies they choose. Those movies you listed will not achieve that. Search for smaller movie houses that specialise in those kind of artsy movies.

Robert Pattinson is an A list actor. I am sure that Primetime would put more but in seats that Paw Patrol.
I am also confident that many Hollywood films that don't get an SA release would put more but seats that some South African films. The films I mentioned are getting a lot of buzz worldwide.

Which smaller movie houses would you recommend?

Because many that previously existed don't exist anymore. They either shut down or have been absorved by Sterk Kinkor, which means they don't release smaller or foreign films anymore.

I forget the names now as I never use them but they are in Cape Town.

Some of those are so kuk, they don’t get pirated.
How could you possibly know that?
That is simply not true. There is zero doubt that all of the films I mentioned above will get pirated once they are released on digital.

TIL that "prominent" is a synonym for "straight to video trash" ... who knew ...
None of these films are straight to video. They were released theatically in the US and elsewhere and have been critically acclaimed.

pity, they should have been, clearly

critically acclaimed
go look at most movies on rotten tomatoes and compare the "critics" score to the "audience" score, "critically acclaimed" means nothing, it's just a circle jerk of bought opinions blowing smoke up some studios ass

if it is not a box office hit it should not be in the box office, period, and by the time most movies hit South Africa it is already a mathematical fact whether it was a hit or not, that's why those didn't show here, simple really

Ok, critically acclaimed means labia theatre.

oh and on the question of whether we'll only get billion dollar movies, the best of these three barely cracked $50m i.e. it bombed, the second best bombed a bit harder and the third bombed like Hiroshima:

only one of the three were shown outside of the US at all, not just South Africa, the entire world avoided it ...

EDIT: roflmao, Sarafina! made more money than Your Mother cubed btw :ROFL::ROFL: ... https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt0105316/

Because likely these cost to license and the ROI is not worth it. There are only so many cinemas left over and it's better to show the popular Zoomer stuff there instead of this rom-com Zoomer kuk.

Exactly, most of the Oscar films are just circle jerk movies.
