Fake Uber drivers at a major South African airport hit people with R25,000 bills and ACSA is doing nothing about it

I have seen this heading before somewhere

Can't be here on MyBB because they never repeat articles /s
They waited a whole 2 days before reposing the article! I am also now convinced that MyBB are just using AI to churn out words, because the 2 articles are written by the same author, and have almost mostly identical content, but it is just written differently, and there is no way that someone is going to manually write the same article twice in 2 days.1793272465218.png

Nothing surprises me anymore in South Africa, lawlessness everywhere because criminals got more rights of freedom than law abiding citizens

MyBB Ai soon another article on smart ID cards and bank branches,
you'd think the writers worked for SABC or Multichoice at this rate.
but what I find interesting is not a peep out of Israel and its elections, not only is the AI crazy, but its antisemitic too

Note that some major airports like LAX are officially closed to the public 24/7. There the scammers can be charged with trespassing and their vehicles seized even before they say "hello" to their victims.

But it remains a problem in many countries (yes, Georgia is one of them)

You say that, but I started noticing and calling this out years ago before GenAI, during the daily loadshedding era.
Back then instead of the same article every 2 days, it was the same (electricity-related) article 2 times a day.

So I guess we can call this an improvement now 😏

Tell the customer you will do it cheaper off the books. Then when you swipe at the end you pump the amount way up.
Doesn't make sense to me. I assume the user has the app loaded, and can see the rates, which should be below average (especially for a tourist) of any other form of taxi/shuttle service, so not sure why anyone would want to take an unofficial ride. The point I'm making is that it's a scam from the get go, the weakest link is the user, because the scam itself is not even sophisticated from what I can gather.

In other countries, their tourism police or ministry would be all over this. I don't see why this is specifically ACSA's responsibility. I mean, I'm sure ACSA could be doing more, but this is fraud and, therefore, a criminal matter and tourism reputational issue so the Tourism Ministry should be on top of it.

Technically this isn't an acsa responsibility for passengers being overcharged, it's a combination of the police and the transport department that should be acting on this.

No, the scam is that you get them to not use the app.

There is another possibility that they do something else like not end the ride or take them round in circles but Uber would refund you.

So its not a mall, its got special rules and security.

You can't just solicit services at an airport without a permit, so they do control that aspect.

So then it's not even a "Fake Uber" driver, just a normal taxi scammer - I guess I do not see the connection between Uber and the scam, and as Wingnut said above, if people are still falling for this then I mean really..

But the airport security should chase them away

That's the thing with the scams... they trick you.

Anyway, with all these things its important to create awareness.
