A 28-year-old South African “refugee” who was arrested in the United States following an online vigilante sting operation has been formally indicted on 11 criminal charges involving child sexual abuse material, potentially exposing him to decades in prison if convicted.
Arno Andries Francois Venter was arrested on 16 October in North Olmsted, a suburb of Cleveland in the US state of Ohio, following a filmed interaction with members of the controversial vigilante group Predator Poachers at the Walmart supermarket where he worked.
An unnamed US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson confirmed Venter’s arrest to Daily Maverick on Wednesday in an email that referred to Venter as “a criminal alien from South Africa”.
On 21 October, a grand jury in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, formally indicted Venter on 11 counts: five of “pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor”, five involving the illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material or a performance, and one of “possessing criminal tools”.
“Pandering”, in this sense in Ohio law, refers to the creation, recording, reproduction or publication of material depicting children being sexually abused. The offence does not require the accused to have personally filmed or photographed the abuse.
Venter’s new life in the US came crashing down four months to the day after he arrived.
The DHS told Daily Maverick that he “lawfully entered the United States on June 16, 2026”. The department refused to confirm Venter’s refugee status even after being asked twice.
Questions sent by Daily Maverick to both the US Citizenship and Immigration Services agency and the Amerikaners group, which helps process and refer would-be South African refugees for the US government, went unanswered.
The US embassy in Pretoria, meanwhile, said only the DHS could comment.
When asked on camera whether he was part of the US refugee programme for South Africans, however, Venter explicitly confirmed it.
