Cool Ideas Fibre ISP – Feedback Thread 7

@PBCool @CoolEscalator Not sure if you guys have seen this, but it seems like some of your on-net akamai traffic might be routing internationally on the return path.

Hi there, apologies for the delay, since when have you noticed this behaviour?
But it could be that akamai is just sending that content back to us via international instead of local for some reason, which is not out of the norm unfortunately
I will have a look though.

No worries, I noticed it last night, I just thought I would mention it incase it was something within your control, otherwise it’s not a big deal 🙂

Which services are in it/use it?
• Epic Games / Fortnite
• Battle.net (Blizzard)
• EA App (Electronic Arts)
• Riot Games Client (League of Legends, Valorant)
• Ubisoft / Connect
• Windows Update (Microsoft)
• PlayStation Network updates and downloads
• Xbox Live updates and downloads

Is what it can support

Are there currently any fibre issues in the Linbro Park area of Sandton?

My internet connection keeps dropping for a few seconds before reconnecting. This has happened three times so far today.

Hi, if there is a known issue it will be listed on the announcements page. And if not there please log (which you have done so already)

HI there, apologies for the delay
No I don't see anything for the area at the moment, but i see our team has been in touch for some testing.

I see it currently serves Playstation traffic, are you guys going to use it for Blizzard and other services as well, or is this mainly for the GTA surge coming soon?
They do support Blizzard, I've asked if enabled.

Where it does well for Consoles is because they dont really have TCP Window scaling, so if you have a game being fetched from an international source they would just take forever.

Never mind how great we know MS CDNs work.

RE GTA the pre-launch should help with some pre-loading, but the caches are there just for a general better experience.

So the team says that Blizzard doesnt have a great hit/storage ratio, so it takes up a lot of space for not that many requests.

We have enabled Blizzard in Cape Town to see how it goes as our base in Cape Town is substantially smaller than the JHB+KZN combination.

It's all about finding the sweet spot of sweating the hardware to the best value, the storage on these things are near R200k

Makes sense, Blizzard mostly uses akamai caches nowdays, so I think the main benefit would just be the 17ms quicker trip between us and the cache (without having fetch from JHB), but on PC it will probably not be as noticable as on a console like you mentioned earlier.

Yes and no, if it is a load of small files the lower latency will benefit everyone as the RTT is substantially lower when you are talking about thousands of requests.

Also when akamai caches fall over in the cricket world cup and route everything internationally this may help incrementally.

@PBCool I havent noticed any issues, but just thought I would mention that the IPv6 address for the cache is not working.
The IPv4 works fine though :)

This is now active.
Taking a look at it, quite a few of the services seem to be HTTPS-only and, seemingly providing certs from upstream but coming from a cache in your ASN - did you get appliances or is this lancache style? Some/most of those services you listed are HTTPS forced (sadly) so the box might just be MITM, do you see benefit on SSL traffic? Like Epic, EA, etc.

(If we argue with the upstreams to allow HTTP again it would be a major win.)
