US to suspend South Africa from access to preferential trade programme

how can they both be on their imports?
They are adding tariffs to their imports from various countries, AGOA is duty free to them as well, therefore more taxes get added to what we sell them.
It's the same as the tariffs on their imports from other countries, who does it effect really?

Not just locals could lose their jobs.

“Thousands of people in the US are employed in importing, handling, distribution and retail because of South African citrus. That entire value chain, on both sides of the Atlantic, is now under threat,” said Dr Boitshoko Ntshabele, chief executive of the association.

There's a combination of three outcomes:

- Americans pay more and keep buying from us
- Americans pay the same and we make less profit and potentially have to close down the business
- We raise prices, Americans buy from someone else cheaper than us, and we potentially have to close down the business

3 is a bit of the problem when Trumpy has made tariffs, pretty much everywhere, trying to spur local markets would be the guess.
Don't forget technically we would pay more from them.

I didn't think they would do it, but they did. There will be harm, but there will also be a pivot, and that pivot won't easily lean back toward the US. The US would be well aware. That said, this is still a pressure game, and thus a window.

The US is going to be learning a lot of hard lessons after all this is done.
They have had it cushy for decades, everyone wants to sell into their markets but with all the tariffs and Trumps bs lots of major producers incl Canada and Europe have realised it’s not great having all your eggs in one basket and are now actively seeking alternative markets to the US and once those are buttoned up they won't be so eager to deal with the US as they did before, even if things do change.

One of Trumps lasting legacies will be how he fked up the US trade and currency dominance, he's forced the hands of so many of their trade partners in ways they would never have otherwise had to and now all that can't be undone.

That being said it looks like Trump has at least brought about a much needed political correction, so many wholesome decent candidates are getting massive followings in the US, NYC Mayor Mamdani being one, it’s awesome to see.

The vast majority of our citrus goes to Europe.
