DSL Local Bandwidth 20GB unused every month

Every month I have 20GB of local bandwidth left....while my international CAP runs out every month :p

Like many of us I guess most of my/our work (if you are a web designer or developer) is done on overseas hosting servers.

The sites I manage are hosted overseas because of the crazy local pricing of hosting on local servers...

Cons....When the local ISP network falls over every so often and DNS propagation drives us all mad....it causes massive frustrations.

Pro's...more value for your money.

So I was reading about the new Windows 7 RC etc....(roughly 3.5GB download :lol: ) how much of this type of NEW software is actually available on LOCAL, South African based servers....not domains but servers....the same for all the anti-virus updates and Windows updates we need to do.

The reason I ask is because these downloads ALWAYS comes off my international ADSL bandwidth cap...

Does SAIX/Telkom offer these updates etc on local servers, does Microsoft?

If not; why not ?

Is it just me or are we all being strapped around a barrel and rolled down the hill here.

Just what are we supposed to do with this local allocation....just where are the SA based mirrors.... :sick:

Firstly, your "international" bw is blended - so if you download from a local site, it counts toward your international cap. There is no splitting at the ISP - yes, it is turdish of them. Then once you hit your 3 - 5 gigs it goes to local only for 30GB.

A lot of the big things are hosted locally - Apple, Adobe, MS Updates, even the Win 7 RC. However they are handled by the Akamai distribution network which requires that you use a little bit of blended/international b/w to connect and initiate the connection.

Your best bit is to use a traffic-splitting solution like RouteSentry or (my solution) the Gatecrasher script running on a dd-wrt capable router (see thread here) - it works terrifically and really helps the bandwidth. You can connect a bunch of of pcs to the router, and their bw will automagically be split without any disruption to your other connections. So your int bw is made truly that!
 
Windows 7 RC and Windows updates are downloaded using local bandwidth. I downloaded Win 7 RC by initiating the download with an uncapped account, then resuming with a capped account (local bandwidth). There are quite a few posts on the forum about this. If I remember correctly initiating the download installs a little download utility into your browser that allows resuming. Simply log out of your still uncapped account, then log in with a local only, or capped account to complete the download.
