First post here, long time lurker and taking a long shot with this thread.

Somehow, a few days ago I managed to forget my master password for 1Password.

I've been using the app for a number of years and my master password has remained the same. It feels like I used to enter it more on the pattern of the keyboard as opposed to the actual password string being in my mind.

I last successfully accessed it about a week ago.

Now if you are familiar with 1Password, you'll know that there is no recovery process for the master password. I've tried all the tips and tricks to force myself to remember it, but without any success.

My last resort at the moment is try some sort of password/string generator to try and jog my (obviously failing) memory. Is such a tool available, whereby I can generate passwords but "lock" in part of the string? (I am pretty sure I remember some of the password, but my sequence and some of the variables are incorrect).

Look at the basics first. ;)

Is your Num lock or Caps lock on or off?
Test keyboard function by typing your password in Notepad.

A better way of looking at this: You have not lost it, it is still in your mind, just deeper, and currently overwritten by doubt / confusion...throwing up the incorrect password/s.
Give yourself, or rather make some time to quieten down then either try by writing down and then trying or strait trying.
If still fail, relax and try again when the mind is quiet. This can't be forced ...quietly does it.
Good fortune.

You just to remember the password. There is no way out.

Thanks - got those covered. I've also tried on both my PC and phone.

You're right - I've become a bit obsessed with this whole thing and quite stressed out as I just don't want to face having to reset passwords 50+ logins/passwords and start all over.

Which is why I am looking for some kind of string generator that I can lock certain characters, but have others random, in order to try and stimulate that part of my mind that has given up.

There are password generators, but it won't jog your memory. They output random values.

Do you possibly have 2step authentication on 1Password? If you do you might gain access through 2step.

I you sure you are not trying to hack into someone's account?

100% sure, and completely understand that it may appear that way. If that's what you decide I am trying to do it would be difficult for me to change your opinion otherwise.

Suggest keep it simple, try via laptop keyboard rather than phone less risk of upper/lower case error.
Quiet mind best...sleep on it was the old adage.
Whenever I've tried speeding up recall of a name ie. convinced the 1st letter is a K or C or whatever ....a day later when the right name's recalled it was a completely different letter.

Which is why I'd like to lock a certain portion of the string in, as I partly remember the password.

No 2 step authentication for 1Password. I paid for a license years ago before they offered subscriptions, which (I think) force one to actually register online.

Use an excel spreadsheet.
Would be easier and faster.

Agree entirely. OP might remember it at night, either before going to sleep or just after waking up.

Stop thinking too hard.

Yup happened to me as well (not 1Password but ATM pin) Wait in line with about 3 others. Get to the front, insert card....... uhm....uhm, cancel. Walk of. Tried again on my way home, presto :)

It might me a bit late for OP, but a good idea is to set up biometric access to 1password on a compatible device. That way, if you forget the master password you are at leastv still able to access the passwords stored within. My laptop doesn't have biometrics, but fortunately my phone and tablet do.
