2 ADSL Modems, 1 ADSL Line

I'm a Telkom ADSL512 user with Telkom Internet - which means I can have 2 concurrent connections on my account, right?

In my home, I have 2 extensions for my ADSL line: Upstairs, and downstairs.

Is it possible to have an ADSL modem connected upstairs, and another ADSL modem connected downstairs - but they're both connected to the same Internet account?

In theory, it should work - I think!

Let's assume both modems connect to my account... Does that mean my 512K connection bandwidth is split between the 2 modems (i.e. Each modem only has 256K download)?

No - it won't work (Not at the same time).

1 modem uses 2 copper lines. These 2 copper lines are connected to the DSLAM.

The other modem, will be using the same 2 copper lines, and will conflict with the first modem's data-sending/recieving. You see, none of the modems will bother to check is somebody else is sending/recieving the data on those 2 cables, and worse still, each mdem will think that the incomming message is for it.

So - no, it won't work.

i think it will be possible to establish two concurrent PPPoE connections over one adsl line with one adsl modem. you will just have to network the three devices.

Who's to say it won't work.... because

I just sniffed my connection - the SP still returns PADO Packers, even while you are connected. I havent tried, bu I'm sure you could run 2 pppoe sessions over the same modem/same line.

The bandwidth would be halved though.

384kbps homedsl has a 640kbps upstream, for the record.

This is being mis interpeted. You can have only 1 modem on 1 line, not 2 modems on 1 line - the modems will interfere with eachother. You can however make as many pppoe connections (one on each pc) as you like or your ISP allows (each pc on the lan connected to the ethernet modem be it directly with a LAN cable or via a hub). A usb modem cannot do this (as far as I know) since only 1 pc can "see" it.

Many PPPoE sessions on one line is possible.

What telkominternet allows is multiple pppoe sessions per username (2 or 4 depending on account type).

It doesn't work that way, the total transfer rate never exceeds the maximum for the line (i.e. +-40KB/s for a 384k line).
