2017 Alfa Romeo Stelvio

Alfa Romeo Giulia, Stelvio survive to 2027 as replacements delayed

Reprieve for petrol duo as EV successors are re-engineered for hybrid power – and V6 Quadrifoglios will return

Alfa Romeo will keep selling the Giulia and Stelvio through to 2027 – including the 513bhp Quadrifoglio range-toppers – as it rethinks its plan to replace them with pure-electric successors.

Based on the then-new Giorgio platform, the saloon and SUV siblings were introduced in 2015 and have been only lightly updated since then. This makes them among the market’s oldest cars, raising questions about their ongoing viability, particularly given the need to comply with costly new European emissions and safety regulation.

Alfa Romeo has also shifted focus to the more volume-friendly Tonale and Junior crossovers in the last three years, with the need for an increasingly electrified offering dictating its product strategy – but UK boss Jules Tilstone has confirmed to Autocar that the pure-petrol Giulia and Stelvio can continue.

“Eighty per cent of the [UK] market is still ICE,” he said. “People are looking for fun-to-drive performance ICE cars, and the Giulia and Stelvio offer that in spades.

“Look at the Giulia: you can't get away from the fact that it's a timeless D-segment saloon - and it is still stunning.”

Tilstone confirmed that the pair will continue to be offered with a 270bhp four-cylinder petrol engine as standard and added: “We're also bringing back the Quadrifoglio versions of both the Giulia and Stelvio.”

The V6 performance versions were taken out of production in September but will start running down the line again at Alfa’s factory in Cassino, Italy, from April 2026.

Alfa Romeo Reveals Limited-Edition Giulia & Stelvio

Alfa Romeo has whipped the wraps off the limited-edition Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Collezione.

Alfa Romeo has unveiled the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Collezione (“Four-Leaf Clover Collection”). The pair of special editions was created to honour the legendary ‘Quadrifoglio’ badge, which first appeared on a production Alfa Romeo in 1963. Production is capped at just 63 units worldwide across both models.

The two limited-edition models debut exclusive new paint finishes: Rosso Collezione Giulia and Rosso Collezione Stelvio, bespoke hues inspired by the Rosso Villa D’Este shade worn by the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. The Giulia adopts a deeper, darker interpretation of the shade, while the Stelvio features a brighter and more open tone, reflecting their differing sporting characters.

Powering both the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio Collezione is Alfa Romeo’s 2.9-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol engine producing 375 kW and 600 N.m, delivered to the road via an eight-speed automatic transmission. Each model is fitted with an Akrapovič exhaust system as standard.

Exterior enhancements include an exposed carbon-fibre roof, carbon-fibre front badge and mirror caps, and carbon-fibre trim for the central tunnel and dashboard. Standard carbon-ceramic brakes, featuring red ‘Alfa Romeo’ script on burnished anodised callipers are also present.

Hurrah! The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio will remain on sale until 2027

As will the hot Stelvio, even though both cars were supposed to die last year

Excellent news for proper petrolheads – Alfa Romeo has announced that the Giulia Quadrifoglio will remain on sale until 2027. Quick, we must all go and buy one immediately!

Its sibling the Stelvio Quadrifoglio will also live on until next year, with Alfa claiming it has made the decision “in response to requests from enthusiasts”. Turns out we do have a say in things after all.

“As announced at the recent Brussels Motor Show 2026, we're reopening orders for the Giulia and Stelvio Quadrifoglio, to keep to a promise made to customers of ours who pay the most attention to the extreme performance and pure emotions inherent in Alfa Romeo's DNA,” said boss Santo Ficili.

“This is the best way to celebrate one of the most famous symbols in the automotive world, which brings with it a century-old quest for technical excellence applied to competition and production cars.”

New Giulia and Stelvio: lowdown on crucial new Alfa PHEVs

Executive saloon and Stelvio SUV sibling are due in 2028, having been redeveloped for choice of ICE or EV power

The next-generation Alfa Romeo Giulia will arrive in 2028 alongside a new Stelvio SUV – and the wild, range-topping Quadrifoglio super saloon is set to return to rival the BMW M3 with a choice of electric and petrol power.

The new Giulia and Stelvio were originally due to be launched this year exclusively as EVs, but the Italian brand has revamped its plans as part of a wider rollback by parent firm Stellantis, prompted by the uneven uptake of electric cars.

The current models will remain on sale until next year. The two new Alfas will still switch to an advanced new platform that will allow for massively upgraded electric technology, including ultra-fast charging, but the architecture has now been reworked so that the brand can continue to offer plug-in hybrid powertrains.

Alfa Romeo boss Santo Ficili told Autocar that "we need to consider the entire world because the brand is global", adding that "the world is not ready everywhere" for EVs.

He declared that the firm would continue to offer combustion cars for as long as there is demand, saying: "We need to find a way to satisfy the needs of our customers. What does this mean? It means BEV and it means all the other kinds of endothermic [powertrains], so ICE, PHEV, BEV. So that's the direction."

2027 Alfa Romeo Giulia and Stelvio gain new tech and styling

Alfa Romeo remains committed to the Giulia and Stelvio, with the Italian automaker issuing key refinements to the former and latter for the 2027 model year. This includes subtle exterior updates, enhanced onboard technology, and interior quality upgrades.

Alfa Romeo has stressed the Giulia and Stelvio will continue to express its core identity. Despite modest global sales since their initial launch, these models endure as compelling alternatives to the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class, and X3 and GLC. For 2027, the Italian brand has streamlined the lineup into four distinct trims: Sprint, Veloce, Edizione Luna Rossa, and Quadrifoglio.

Powertrain availability varies by region. The European market retains a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder turbodiesel. Offers in two states of tune, the oil-burner can be had with either a rear- or all-wheel drivetrain, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Select global markets receive a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine, which sends 206 kW to the rear wheels via the same eight-speed self-shifter.

The Quadrifoglio continue to spearhead the range. The apex models in the Giulia and Stelvio lineups employ a 2.9-litre twin-turbocharged V6 developing 382 kW. In the sedan, power is exclusively delivered to the rear wheels, while the Stelvio features Alfa Romeo’s Q4 all-wheel-drive system. The automaker has sharpened handling dynamics via Chassis Domain Control, active suspension, and a mechanical self-locking differential. The extensive use of carbon-fibre components has reduced kerb weight. The Stelvio Quadrifoglio upgrades to 21-inch alloy wheels as standard.
