There’s a new version of Volvo’s best-selling car of all time. It’s new ‘long-range’ plug-in hybrid XC60 can now travel up to 124 miles on hopes and dreams – kidding! – electricity alone.

The larger XC90 has undergone a bit of marathon training too, because that big friendly family bus can now do up to 99 miles on electrons, which adds an enormous amount of flexibility to both cars.

Most of the increase comes courtesy of a much larger battery hidden in the floor of the popular SUVs, weighing in at 41.2kWh versus the 18.8kWh before. The electric motor is a touch more powerful too, now producing a max of 175bhp (versus around 150-odd horsepower in the previous gen).

Run of out e-juice, and the familiar 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine of both cars joins the party to add… many more miles. The range-topping T8 AWD long-range XC60 can now hit 62mph a fraction quicker than before – 4.8s (!) – while the T8 XC90 can do it in 5.2s. Both irrelevant metrics in family cars, but fun to know nonetheless.

Boasting improved electric-only operating ranges, Volvo has announced the South African launch timing for the XC60 and XC90 long-range PHEVs.

Volvo has announced the introduction of the XC60 and XC90 long-range plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, with the Swedish automaker confirming South African launch timing for the duo. According to the Gothenburg brand, these SA-bound XC60 and XC90 models offer electric-only operating ranges “more than two and a half times as high” as previously.

Volvo’s local arm has confirmed the XC60 and XC90 long-range PHEVs will arrive in SA in the first half of 2027. The new-energy XC60 and XC90 offers claimed electric-only operating ranges of 200 and 160 km, respectively. As a reminder, the current variants offer 88 and 71 km, respectively. The firm says this comes courtesy of a larger-capacity battery and more powerful electric motors for both models.

The current XC60 and XC90 PHEVs available in our market employ a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo- and supercharged petrol engine coupled with two electric motors, sited front and rear, respectively. The electric motors are paired with a 19 kWh battery pack. The XC60 and XC90 PHEVs produce combined power and torque outputs of 340 kW and 709 N.m, delivered to the road via an all-wheel-drive system mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission. The carmaker claims combined fuel consumption figures of 1.6 and 1.8 L/100 km for the XC60 PHEV and XC90 PHEV, respectively.
