Rally-bred road-legal Land Rover Defender Dakar confirmed
Land Rover has announced the production of the Defender Dakar, a road-legal version of the British marque’s Defender D7X-R, which secured victory in the Stock class at the 2026 Dakar Rally.
Following its debut victory in the Stock class at the 2026 Dakar Rally in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, the factory-backed Defender Rally team has unveiled the Defender Dakar. The Dakar is positioned as a road-legal, competition-bred variant of the Dakar Rally-winning Defender D7X-R, which itself is largely based on the Defender Octa.
Under the bonnet, the Dakar retains the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 employed by the Octa and D7X-R. The BMW-derived petrol unit produces 467 kW and 750 N.m of torque. The powertrain will feature drive programmes such as Dunes, Gravel, and Flight Mode. Carried over from the competition car, the latter stabilises the vehicle after airborne jumps.
Unlike the Octa, which features Land Rover’s 6D Dynamics air suspension, the Dakar adopts a motorsport-inspired setup comprising heavy-duty coil suspension with Bilstein Advanced Dampers. The Dakar will also boast a wider track and increased ground clearance. The Dakar will be fitted with new 20-inch forged alloy wheels, wrapped in 35-inch all-terrain tyres.
The Dakar features a similar livery as the Defender D7X-R. However, the limited-run off-roader is also available with a selection of alternative body hues, including Narvik Black and Alaska White. Roof-mounted lighting, carbon-fibre raised air intakes, and underbody protection are present.
