Beats me how we'd cope on a 3GB cap. We're on Sentech's "128k" (yeah, right), and the two of us do about 6-7GB in download and somewhat less than that in uploads each month - mostly in surfing and small downloads.

3 Gig not enough for modern users

The only way I seem to get my ADSL to work for me is the following way:
At the beginning of the month, do all my browsing and international usage. Inevitably I have to download all my various windows auto updates etc. at this time of the month so it chows a decent portion of my cap. I normally get capped by the 10th of the month and this is being rather restrictive with no excessive downloading and as many people put it, not raping my connection.
After I'm capped, I go all out insane with downloading and rake in just over 90 gigs up+down on a monthly basis. (For you that don't know, there are local places with very very good downloads if you know what I mean). This might be considered going to the extreme and consequently damaging the service for everyone else. Not quite, because remember, im doing my raping locally and there is absolutetly nothing wrong with the local infrastructure and it can most certainly handle all of the ADSL users downloading at maximum capacity (locally). Its just another Telkom deception and becomes part of their scam to measure your local and international up/downstream together so that you have to buy more accounts to surf internationally and keeping you from even downloading locally!

What occurs to me is a user backlash- fight the capping & shaping of telskum...W-bs...suckingtech...vodacon, with retaliatory fire.
To do this, you would need to know exactly how they measure your usage, how their capping & shaping systems work, and then take a hacker's approach (I am not suggesting hacking) to finding a loophole that confuses all those systems, and effectively makes them run about in circles when everyone is using the same kind of workaround simultaneously.

ic - need some kinda p2p system that uses http protocol so when the ISP's try and block you can't browse any http sites. my 2 cents, btw i'm not a hacker,programmer,coder,cracker,it professional - just very interested in internet technology.

.But then ISP's won't block P2P completely as that is what most folks use their broadband connections and ISP accounts for .... but hell they will definitely shape them.

i agree fully
i returned to the great SA after living and studying in a couple european cities for the last 7years. the life i have in south africa is really great. this place has so much potential. the one thing that has pissed me off is the high cost of internet access. the people in power of telecoms have turned this basic service into something of a priveledge. how do they expect us to become part of the global village? how do they expect kids to think outside the box if they can't afford entry into the window that the internet is? 3 gig is way too little. i used mine in a week. we live in an age of streaming audio/video. we live in an age of many opportunities - without affordable broadband we will miss the boat.
