384 vs 512 (mainly for gamming)

Hi all

First post in ADSL forums :D :D .

I applied for ADSL about 8 months ago but like a fool i cancelled the order when iburst looked so much better.
Since i use the connection mainly for on-line gamming iburst has become a nightmare with lag spikes every few seconds and the modem almost finding its way into my garden a few times via the bedroom window.

Anyway i would like to know from those with experience since after August the price diffrence between 384 and 512 will be about R120.00 unless i missed something along the way.

and finally without further suspense the question.

Is there any real diffrence in gamming experience between the 384 and 512 ?

Nope there is no difference gaming wise between 512k and 384K.

Personally I would not pay the extra for the little speed gain. Get 384K and if you feel you really must have the extra speed upgrade later, it is free. Downgrading isn't though.

That is actually a great idea. As I said upgrading is free so maybe go for 192 as lewstherin suggested and if you need more speed upgrade.

No gaming difference and no risk.

*There should be no difference in your gaming experience. The latency should be the same for both options. The difference comes in where with the 384 option you could have 4 guys playing the same line with the same latency, you could have about 6 on the 512 line.

Im using a 384 connection, might upgrade to 512. Battlfield requires about a 128kbit connection, so what i do is, i use NET limiter to limit downloads to say, 200kbits, then the 184kbit remaining is for guaranteed bandwidth for gaming.
So yes and no, if you want to download and play online simultaneously, 384/512 is great... otherwise, nothing wrong with 192 :)

Problem is I have seen the ping shoot up when downloading and playing at the same time. In general never download while you play and yes I did use netlimiter to limit flashget.

I thougth so too, but why is my ping to www.saix.net 27 - 33 ms on a 192kbps line and 15 - 19 ms on a 512kbps bussiness line ?
 
Me plays BF2 and downloads at 30Kb/s on a 512. No worries.
But like they're all saying, if you're not going to play and download, 384 is more than enough, and 192 will cut it with most games - though, not BF2 I fear.

The lowest "real ping" I have seen to saix was 25ms. Was this on Counter Strike source? If so I can get a 5ms ping on any connection in the world, rates.
 
192 is enough for BF2, as we play 2 computers all the time on a 384 connection, no lag, on 64 player full severs.
(PS. 384 = 192 X 2) lol

oh but it does, I play BF2 just fine on my 192kbps line. ping just tends to shoot up to 1000 when sister downloads media player on the other PC :rolleyes:

this is from command prompt ;) . I dont know about any internet connection, in blessed South Africa on average distance from exchange, with a 5ms ping (from command prompt) to www.saix.net.

Well from the command prompt I get a 33-40ms ping.

ROFL not from the command prompt no.

If you change your rates in CSS you can have a constant 5ms ping although your "real" ping will still be 50 od.
