3G connection from notebook to PC

At home I share a desktop PC's 3G connetion with my Media Center PC and Laptop. I am using Windows ICS and it works fine.

1) Check that you laptop does not have a firewall blocking the PC.
2) I manually configured the Vodacom DNS server IP addresses on the Media Center and Laptop.
3) Once connected, check in Network Connections that you are sharing the correct connection (multiple connections may be created if you use different APNs).

I hope someone has some ideas here pls. I want to let my Pc connect to Internet using my notebook's 3g connection. But "internet connection sharing " does not seem to work. :(

I use ICS to do exactly the same thing at home. One thing to note : the Laptop's (or PC that is hosting the Internet connection) IP MUST be 192.168.0.1. Anything else won't work. Don't know why, just one of Microsoft's tricks.

Hope this helps.

If you don't mind getting your hands a little bit dirty, rather set up a proxy server on the laptop, I use a free one called Proxy+ (http://www.proxyplus.cz/download.php?lang=en) , install it and set it up on the laptop, then on the PC just change all your proxy address settings to the address of the laptop.

You'll need to read the manual as you have to configure the proxy server properly, but once it's working I find it a lot easier to use than Windows ICS.

Not sure how this can be easier.

Host Setup:

1) Open Internet Connection
2) Tick the ICS box and ensure you have a static network ip of 192.168.0.1
3) Ensure Default Gateway points to 192.168.0.1

Client Setup:

1) Open Network Connection
2) Set static ip of 192.168.0.x
3) Set Default Gateway to 192.168.0.1

Connect to internet and away you go.

The only real trick is Windows Firewall blocking connections but you can disable this.

Since 3G uses shared external IP's and are Natted the risk of someone actually connecting to your machine remotely is quite low, albeit still there.

Again the trick is the IP range which is what ICS is configured for.

I already have wireless router assigning fixed IP addresses to all my devices, so being forced to use 192.168.0.1 on the ICS machines and then having it assigning IP addresses to clients as well just does not work for me.

I also use ICS successfully and my local LAN IP addresses are different:

[(3G)PC(LAN 192.168.1.1)]<->[(192.168.1.2 WAN)Router(Wifi 192.168.2.1)]<->[(192.168.2.100 Wifi)Media Center(LAN 192.168.3.1) <-> (192.168.3.2 LAN)XBox360]

If I put the PC on 3G, even the xbox (3 hops away) can access the internet and play online games. I don't use any NAT on my router.
But, I initially could not get the PC to do proper DNS lookup, so I manually configured the Vodacom DNS servers on all my devices.

Perhaps you have the same DNS problem.
