Call me stupid and dumb! I don't care! PLEASE just help me!

I have like in ZERO knowledge of how networks work...

Is it possible for me to connect to the internet and email through wi-fi from my iPhone via my laptop's MTN 3G USB connection?

I have tried to make the laptop a "Hot Spot" but zero success...

The iPhone picks up the laptop but I can't get connected to the internet...

The wireless is switched on on my Laptop and as I said the iPhone picks it up, but I cannot connect to the net...

Is what I'm trying possible in any way or do I need a router? If I DO NEED a router, will it work with 3G and which one will be the best for my situation and where can I buy it?

I hope I make sense...

I have 2 laptops... one with XP and the other with Win 7. Couldn't get it to work on either of them...

Thanks so long....

You have to enable "Tethering" on your iphone by calling MTN to enable it.

Thanks for your reply!

Isn't tethering then going to make use of the iPhones internet connection?

I actually want to use my Laptop's MTN 3G connection since I have a 2gig bundle and want to go slow on the iPhones internet usage.

The iPhone is on a Vodacom Contract. Sorry, I forgot to mention that...

Gosh, I hope I make sense!

Hi Park@82

I have tried that too, works and connects to the iPhone like a charm but it still won't connect to the net through the 3G USB modem... I think it needs a LAN connection which I don't have... :-(

But it seems to me, that a Router is the only way to get what I want...

Now I need to find a 3G router...

you might also want to google and try setting up internet connection sharing (ICS).
