512k voIP quality

Hey all, has anyone been using 512k with say skype for making local calls? I want to know what the reliability and quality is like? Whens telkom releasing their 1megabit line btw? Cheers :P
 
your ADSL line speed doesn't have much to do with skype ... if you are on 192 kbps or 1 Mbit, no difference whatsoever, unless you want to make 10 calls simultaneously ...

otherwise skype quality to overseas apparently vary ... If you want to make skype out local calls, doesn't make much sense as it is too expensive, if you want skype to skype then the quality will be very good as far as I know
 
skype uses about 24kb/s each way so the voice quality depends on what i don't know as a 56K modem will do, sometimes the quality is crystal clear and sometimes it really sucks.
 
Cool thanx but if u have a phone bill that costs alot more than the cost of 512k adsl wouldn't it be better to just use your adsl for voIP to make all your calls?
 
No because the people on the other end get irritated no end with the poor quality, unless you get a usb skype phone, might work better, most of the time i can hear the other side fine but they hear my voice breaking up. So i don't think you can do business deals with skype. Headphones also help to prevent a echo, instead of using your speakers.

Hi All

New to this!, my skype was great on 56k but when I got ADSL it was TERRIBLE!, I upgraded to the new version and now it's like a phone call. headset or speakers. Now also got VSKYPE and can video conference to UK as well.
 
Give vonage a try, when I was in SA in May I tried this out and NEVER had a bad line, on a 512K DSL line at a buddies house. You just have to use it enough to justify the monthly fee.
 
So how does this skype work anyway,, can you phone anybody anywhere?
 
Basically you need a mic and speakers, download the skype package for your OS and buy some skypeout credits, then you can phone any mobile or landline in the world from 15 to 24 cents per minute more or less. If a friend of yours has skype installed you can chat for free to them. Check out www.skype.com

15 to 24 cents? Last time I checked on the Skype website, it was like 60c a minute to landline, and 1.60c to a mobile?!
