Thoughts on the Asus DSL-N14U router

My Telkom Netgear DG83x packed up last night after a few years of service.. So I'm considering either the TP-Link TD-W8968 or one of these... though I am leaning towards the DSL-N14U, mainly for the:

- frequent firmware updates
- the offline downloading directly to USB
- and the Intelligent bandwidth sharing

What about the firmware that doesn't get patched/takes forever to get patched:

The DSL-N14U is getting regular firmware updates - check here > https://www.asus.com/support/Download/11/2/0/110/aW4W2PRynAYHOUBk/45/

I hope/presume that it is still running without issues for those of you that have them..

@asus_sa - does it have in-built lightning protection?

So TakeAlot increased the price on DSL-N14U this afternoon (after my previous post )

Now they're priced in the same ballpark as Esquire and FirstShop. . .

I think the DSL-N14U is a very good buy for the price, you can read my opinion about it here

And no, I do not work for ASUS, and no, they do not pay me to write reviews of their products

As for concerns about the firmware, my experience with their support has been very good and they made adjustments to the firmware to specifically deal with my noisy Telkom line

This is great feedback I'm reading on this thread. I can now rest knowing that the modem I ordered is going to be worthwhile.

Good Morning, does anybody know how to set up the 3g/4g failover on the DSL-N14u, i have been struggling to use this function. i bought the router 2 days ago

Update firmware first, the base firmware on some units doesnt support 3g. Thereafter it's pretty easy to configure

I have this router for about 2 months. When I got it, it used to reboot every now and then. Then I saw a firmware update and it seemed more stable. But recently it has been rebooting again.
The only difference is that I changed from using a USB powered 2tb hard drive for the media server and now I am using a 5tb external powered hard drive.
Any got any ideas?

Hi thisgeek,

Sorry about the troubles you've gone through on your device. If I may ask, when was the last time you did a firmware update? Perhaps the latest firmware may solve the issue.
There hasn't been a firmware update in a while for this device. I have one too, and find it difficult to see if a specific computer is hogging all the bandwidth as there are not statistics for that. Setting the priority levels for each device also doesn't seem to have much effect. The WIFI tends to bog down if a connected device is on the edge of the range of reception.

What is particularly painful is every setting change requires the DSL router to be rebooted.

Hi Khatani,

We haven't tested 5tb ourselves, so not sure about compatibility. Bear in mind, this is an entry level modem router so the processor isn't designed to handle a large storage.

DSL-AC68U handles multi-tasking much more efficiently.

Have you installed the firmware launched in Nov 2015? Perhaps give that a try?

Thanks.

The last firmware update was Nov 2015. Version 1.1.0.4. Have you updated to this version?

Wifi connectivity has been improved. Traffic Monitoring should be working fine too once you've done this upgrade.

Anybody else struggling with the wifi portion on the N14U router? ADSL is working nicely but wifi keeps dropping, can't seem to broadcast for more than 5 minutes without bombing out (which is a pity).

I'm thinking either the device is faulty or something is interfering with the signal. Only thing is my old Huawei 3G router was solid as a rock in exactly the same location using exactly the same settings.

Any advice?

Hi Deezil,

Please advise what version of firmware you're using?

If you're on an older version, kindly update to Version 1.1.0.4.

Thanks ... I am on 1.1.0.4

Received 2nd new unit today. Was working perfectly fine for about an hour but now wifi is dead again. Nothing. Nada. Nilch. Fokkol. I'm seriously disappointed in this PoS.

Our old Huawei B683 works like the bomb and never showed any of these issues. My much ****tier TP-Link at home doesn't drop wifi either. This definitely a first for me, will probably return the damn thing AGAIN and buy another TP-Link

I have the DSL-N14U. Its a decent router for the price. I will however avoid supporting ASUS after the pathetic support I got from them recently.

2 units, same symptoms,I do wonder whats more likely: 2 defective units from different batches,or something at the home

I've been thinking along the same lines. Moved portable telephone base station to the opposite side of the room, didn't help yesterday afternoon. Still had no signal by 18:00 last night. Went home frustrated.

Obviously everything is working perfectly fine this morning without me having touched a thing. Go figure. Will see how long it lasts, holding thumbs

Edit: 60 minutes later and zero wi-fi. ADSL going like a Boeing, wi-fi completely awol.

Edit 2: Rebooted router yesterday afternoon. Everything working perfectly since then, I still have no idea what caused the wifi to drop. Anyway, so far so good. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Anyone able to find the firmware for this router recently? The link above only shows "utilities" and no firmware :?

Hi everyone - I bought one of these based on good reviews and the current special at Makro. Setup was easy, and it connected fast. I like the software, as it gives you a lot of options to configure, without making it so complex that you can't find your way around - overall quite a good router. The Wi-Fi signal isn't as strong as my old D-Link though, which is a big disappointment as my house is funny shaped and quite large. Overall a good experience.
