Fooling criminals with smart lights

I need something like this for my parents.

Don't have the budget for a Philips Hue system.

Anyone know how I can get smart lighting or automate normal lights relatively cheaply?

Buy some timers.

Sellers on Aliexpress sells the Sonoff units for around $5, I think that's probably the cheapest you'll be able to do smart lighting.

I've got day night sensors which fit into existing light fittings, the light switches on and off randomly at night.

Why would a day/night sensor switch on/off randomly at night? Not supposed to do that.

I would also be interested re: this

I got some from Builders Warehouse. These learn the ambient light levels and function accordingly. This means that they pick up the reflection of their own light at night, turn off after they get used to it, then turn back on since there is no light. Repeat endlessly. They function best where they do not pick up too much reflected light.

In SA, the armed robbers (aka home invaders if you a merican) will just be pleasantly surprised that there is in fact no one at home...
