ADSL Downloading

I would like to be clear on downloading, if I should have a 3gig adsl package and I may only use 3gig max to download does this mean "each page I am browsing while on the net or is it only actual downloads ie. movies or mp3's and while my download manager is busy downloading"..

Every little byte counts - so yes, that includes web sites.

The 3GB includes everything that enters or leaves your connection. (Downloading and uploading)

There is from a server's point of view not difference in opening a webpage image or downloading a 500MB file (if both is http...).

The cap also includes email, p2p traffic, nntp (newsgroups), irc (chat), etc.

p2p are a easy way to cap your connection since it uploads a lot of data.

If you are at a saix isp, you can check your cap usage at http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/ logging in with the same username and password that you use to connect. Please note that this info is only updated once you diconnect.

Does anyone use DC++ to download ? Under what does that fall - P2P or Torrents ? How fast will I download?

DC++ is used by some to download stuff.

It falls under the P2P category.

DC++ will download from local hosts at your full line speed, and from international hosts at really bad speeds during office hours, improving a teensy weensy little bit - sometime improving a lot - at night.

Any P2P program can require that you make content available, and if you configure it so that you are making content available, you must take into account the line-speed wasted sharing content with other peeps.

DC++ is p2p.

if telkom's port shaping doesn't effect you, expect these speeds:

dsl192 - approx. 20KB/s
dsl384 - approx. 35 - 45KB/s
dsl512 - approx. 55KB/s

if you have port shaping.. you'll get crap speeds on all dsl packages.

btw, i use torrents on a 384 line, and i get full speed (512 speed often).

There are a South African DC Hub or two. I don't know if they would like me post a address. Ask around and search.

DC (as in DC++) stands for Direct Connect and is a P2P file-sharing protocol.
IRC (clients?) usaully support DCC (Direct client connections) for file transfer and certain kinds of private chats. (Correct me if I'm wrong)

It is two completely different protocols with different uses, but similiar names.

DC++ is a specific DC client. Some other clients (mostly based on DC++ also exist such as rmDC++ , StrongDC++, etc. They have a slightly differnt feature set)
