Hi all,

Looking for a bit of info here. I bought a Samsung J1 to test a software app I want to run on it but have run into a snag when trying to update it. According to GSMArena.com, the supported version is 5.1 (Lollipop) but the version on the phone is currently 4.4.4. When I check for updates, I get a message saying that there are no new updates available.

Who is responsible for the OS updates, the manufacturer or the service provider (MTN in my case)? Are only certain versions available in different countries?

both, MTN probably doesnt have support for 5,1 and samsung didnt release in this country a official version of 5,1 for these phones,

thats what makes buying a android phone running cyanogen such a attractive proposition as it comes with more frequent updates,

that or a nexus or when its launched a pixel phone,

you can of course go the rooted/romed version that will have all the updates applied to it,

Unfortunately, installed OS versions can change during a phone's release cycle, meaning that while the current version of J1 ships with 5.1, the version you picked up comes from a slightly older run, hence the older version. Sadly, OS updates/upgrades are more the exception to the rule than the norm - meaning you might have to go the risky route and do it yourself.

Thanks. You guys confirmed pretty much what I suspected. Just got back from Samsung now and they confirmed that while it supports Android 5.1, it is not available in SA on that specific device. I wasn't aware that updates were region specific.

I'd stay with stock for general app development. Cyanogen or a cooked rom of any kind won't give the same feedback as stock.

GSM arena shows 4.4.4 for these models: J100F, J100FN, J100H, J100H/DD, J100H/DS, J100M, J100MU
And it shows 5.1.1 for these models: J120F (Global); Galaxy Express 3 J120A (AT&T); J120H, J120M, J120M, J120T

I think that's the OP's confusion. I cannot find any reference to a J100H with 5.1.1 anywhere on the internets.
