A road-side hawker is fighting for his life in hospital after being shot on the side of the R512, north of Johannesburg.
The compost and plant seller was found by a passing motorist. The events leading up to the shooting are still unclear.
Netcare 911's Mark Stokoe says the wounded man stopped a passing motorist to get help.
Police are now hunting for the gunman as well as for witnesses to the shooting.
Meanwhile, there has been a shootout on the N1 highway just before the Allendale off-ramp in Midrand.
Police say they were chasing suspects who hijacked a car in Kyalami this morning. No injuries have been reported. The police Jacob Mutadi says no arrests have been made.
