Any mountain bikers?

Not only Cape Town. There are Critical Mass and Moonlight Mass rides at many major centres around SA.

In Durban we do the Critical Mass ride on the last Friday of every month at 6pm from Moses Mabhida stadium. The Moonlight Mass ride is on the night of the full moon every month starting at Moses Mabhida again but at 8pm. All are welcome. There have been some extra rides over the festive season so best to join the Facebook group for details of the events:

Did a 30km ride to Meerendal and back today. Beautiful morning out. First time back on a bike since my fall at Majik Forrest 7 weeks ago... Broke my collarbone then and I've just been given the green light by the shoulder guy. Feels good to be back!! :)

Why didn't you do the Argus MTB ?

Yes, surprisingly my time on the 29K is within a minute of last years time. The 66K would have been 75K but they decided to shorten in due to the hot weather. It was a tough ride but I enjoyed it.

There are some superb rides coming up now that it is MTB season, keen an eye on http://www.pedalpower.org.za/?post_type=sp_events&eventDisplay=upcoming for good ones in and around the Cape.

With all due respect, you talk rubbish. Sorry a little rude but I sat trying to work out how else to put it :)

As mentioned, I personally bought a Silverback Phoenix 2011 model in November 2011 from Leewees Cycles in JHB for R4,500. At the time new ones were STILL selling elsewhere for R7k and a second hand one was on the Hub for R4.5k. And to back this argument up even more a mate of mine bought himself a 2012 Silverback Vida 5 for R5.5k from a shop in Durban a few weeks back. I cannot vouch for the usual price as most places online now show them as being out of stock. Of course, there is unlikely to be a proliferation of these old models as most shops to not keep vast quantities of stock but they are around.

Secondly, the middle of the year is not the norm to get the new 2013 range. I just spoke to a chap at Specialized, not a name drop but to check my facts, and he said this year was abnormal for them as there was a stock shortage of 2012 models due to change of importers into SA so they ran out and started getting the 2013 models in August on the low end bikes but the top end are still only arriving in now. I asked about the sale of 2012 models and he said with the stock shortages there is very little this year but it is usual to clear towards the end of the year. Remember he is just talking about Specialized but at the lower end this is probably even more relevant as more stock is held.

Finally, you will often find that it is not merely an upgrade of the old bike but a range may be discontinued, so the newer model might be totally different. This is particularly relevant with the proliferation of 29ers. The same chap just confirmed that they do still have some 2012 26" Specialized bikes in the warehouse that they are selling at R13k, normal price R17k. The same thing happened with my Phoenix. It is no longer part of the Silverback range so it is not as easy as saying the 2012 model was an improvement on mine. No doubt they would have had a replacement of some sort but not my same bike.

Apologies for being argumentative but when someone corrects something I say when I know it to be true I need to point it out :)
With all due respect you are speaking rubbish. I know this is an old post but just thought you need to be corrected. Cbrunson is correct about the next years models do start coming out from June July onwards. You are correct spez did away with the middle man and opened up their own head office in SA and this did affect their stock issues

With all due respect you are speaking rubbish.
:D glad to see I am not the only one thinking that. ClintZA will really s..t him self when he sees my current bike. Its a fairly high spec 29er frame with old cheap entry level components on it : http://www.thehubsa.co.za/forum/topic/127544-zaskar-on-a-budget-my-baskar/

I love it  rides like a dream!

Thanks for the compliment.

Well I plan to gradually upgrade the bike to the level it should be, seeing it cost R20k if you buy a stock Zaskar 9R Pro LE it could take awhile for me :)

Actually got it back from the LBS yesterday, took it for a thorough service before next weekends TransKaroo. They replaced the rear derailleur with a nice Deore unit which seems more stable than the Acera I had (and that got basked with a stone). Once I have about R3k to blow I'll probably get an airshock.
