I wish some american company would come into south africa and give us what we deserve and screw this damn telkom. Couldnt we just go through satellite ? wouldnt it be cheaper ?

Yep, all ADSL lines terminate in a Telkomonopoly exchange, the advantage of ADSL whether one calls it Telkomonopoly ADSL or not, is that your ISP account [mostly comprised of bandwidth] can be with UUNET or IS via one of their resellers, or you could opt for a Telkomonopoly ISP account direct or through one of their resellers...

the lines yes. if UUNET came out tomorrow with 1mbit ADSL with no cap i'd take it, because its one upped iBurst, I go with whoever offers me the fastest speeds with the most data for my coin, right now thats iburst BUT I will never ever ever ever ever go for Telkom as an ISP

Yep, we had that - SBC, not only did they scr3w Telkomonopoly, but they scr3w3d consumers even more...

Anyways I think that both Vodacom & MTN are going to kill goofy-ISP WBS with iBurst when they have HSDPA up and running, think about the number of 3G towers they will have with 1.5Mbits/s bursting to 2Mbits/s...:D
 
SAME! My speeds are damn SLOOWW today! What the problem is?! Called centre at 10am, they said they were busy and that they would call me back! :P Its 16h30 now and still nothing. Ive been trying to call them ever since 2pm, and still f@k-oll!
 
the little money sucking bitches of IBurst would appear to have signed up more people than they have available bandwidth to supply..


To irritate them immensely, callers to the help desk should start using the phrase 'your service is over-subscribed isn't it' - and listen to their ducking n diving..

be more specific .. The internet connectivity may not run thru telkom . Depends on who you go through.
The Line conectivity will run through telkom though

What i mean is that generally the service will eventually end up with Telkom will it not?
So does it matter who u get it through? In the end telkom will decide about price and service.
 
craigsa, it's been said (and I quote an american buddy of mine) that they will screw you out of every possible penny possible.

So no, what we need to have is regulation. ICASA with teeth. No communications minister over riding or contradicting what she said, more involvement of our president in his own country (rather than concentrating on trying to win the nobel peace prize by trying to solve other countries conflicts)

I bet you the president doesn't even have a flucking clue about what the communications minister is up to.

Too many chiefs, too little indians, that also a problem. So yea, the problem is a bit bigger than just "get some foreign dudes to give us the service we need"
 
Telkom arent the only owners of SAT3 and SAFE, but they are the only owners of the telecoms syetms in this country, so you coul dget away with paying them for alot but NOT the phone lines

yeah my connection died, I did a reboot and recconeccted and its humming away nicely at 120KB/s, but as more people recconect (to those who were affected) we should see a little bit of slow down I'd assume

Speed test using PDF file download from my server in Florida, USA

Constant download speed: 12 ~80kbyte/sec (it varies too much to give a constant reading)

Little bit worse than usual, but I guess the overseas links are being hit hard as per Rodent's explanation (everyone is uncapped today)

K , moved house 2day from midrand to irene centurion. Connecting to PTA East tower and getting 90 kbytes/sec without any sweetspot hunting
