Anyone tried Ubuntu?

I would like to try other distros but the only reason why I stick to ubuntu is the local updates and repo servers which allows me to install EVERYTHING I need using local ADSL. If there is another distro with dedicated local servers then I'll give it a shot.

ftp.is.co.za has a pretty good linux section which is updated regularly and is kept quite up to date (within 2 days or so).

Thanks for all the responses to my noobient questions.
The light has certainly come flooding in :p :D

kk so now to decide on which OS to use. :)

Kk ended up going with Kubuntu and downloading now.
Will let you all know later what I think of it

/holding thumbs :o :D

While we on Ubuntu topic ...
How much space on HDD after installation does it take?
Me have 3Gig hard drive around and want to take a try!

You need 4GB minimum I think, why not test linux in a virtual machine like virtualbox instead?

How big is the fedora download?
I don't really make use of local bandwidth and only have like 3.5Gig left for the month to burn :p

Been looking at Kubuntu 8.04. (700mb according to their site)

Which of these two options would be easier for a noob to be playing around with?

given they are LiveCDs they can't be more than 700MB.

I personally prefer Fedora, but perhaps I might be a bit biased considering Fedora was the first ever Linux OS I came into contact with. Suse is not bad, Knoppix is also good. Tried Ubuntu but as I said earlier it just wasn't Fedora.

I had a very good laugh at the title of the topic. I do apologize, it is not directed at you Marco, but at this stage it is the most popular Linux distro by a long shot, and asking that question is like asking a racing driver if he has ever driven a fast car.

You will find some very knowledgeable people regarding Ubuntu on here, so shoot with the questions!

Just for the record, I tried Ubuntu/Kubuntu and hate it. But that is a story for another time.
:D

This is actually quite a good laugh :p
The only reason that I use [K]Ubuntu is because it's easy to install and I've been using it now for a number of years. Tried the others but feeling quite at home here.

Fedora is just over 4GB. There is a problem with some of the Fedora iso's; a couple of people (including me) downloaded it and discovered halfway through the install that the iso was corrupt. This was on more than one server.

Good thing I ended up going with Kubuntu then :p

KDE and Gnome are only DE's, the underlying Linux is still Linux, and can be checked by dropping to command line (command prompt) where you will notice that the commands at this point are mostly the same for KDE and Gnome and most of the other Linux distros out there (for Debian distros anyway, as Ubuntu is a derivative of Debian). For example if you issue the following at the command prompt, the results should be the same for both KDE and Gnome...etc:
Code:
uname -a
Doing this will display the Linux kernel you are currently using.

EDIT: And I am surprised that more poeple here haven't asked you where you have been hiding the past few years ;)

what are you on about? it's a LiveCD ISO. It has to fit on a CD. The link I put up there (32-bit) is 680MB. I used it without issue to install F10.

Running Ubuntu Server x64 on dual quad Xeons' and it purrs along nicely :)
