Anyone using iBurst in Faerie Glen Pta?

Due to a family emergency we're moving back home from the USA after 7 years abroad. I am keeping my job with my American employer and need fast stable internet service as I'll be working from home doing programming etc over vpn.

Seems broadband in SA is a total mess. Can't believe how crappy it still is.

I'm currently with Optimum Online from Cablevision here in New Jersey, and I have their tripple play package, VOIP unlimited calling in North America for $29.95, Family Cable TV $29.95 (200+cannels) and Optimum Online internet at $29.95 - I've NEVER had slower download speeds than 8MBit/s. For a total of $102 / month including taxes everything.

Anyway, is there anyone in Faerie Glen Pta using iBurst ? I am really trying my best to not go with hellkom. Let me know your experience.

Hi Tech....

Unless you're SURE of reliable & good iBurst service I'd currently suggest you stick to the devil we know... ADSL.

Many would say iBurst is great for this but I've been one of the less lucky ones...

Hi techworker, welcome to MyADSL .

Two issues that will no doubt affect your ability to VPN with iBurst:

• Highish International Latency
• Unreliable International Bandwidth

Since you're no doubt going to be paid in USD I assume price is not a deciding factor, and you will probably need something relatively more reliable than iBurst, well that would be ADSL with a 30GB account perhaps - hopefully enough for VoIP, VPN etc...

Apart from contention on certain iBurst base-stations which drags WBS' implementation of iBurst into the nearest rubbish tip, there are also some severe product/marketing failings, and if I recall correctly Slimothy revealed one of those recently - like a limit on the maximum amount of bandwidth you can purchase...although I assume iBurst resellers aren't restricted that way...if you do consider getting iBurst [assuming there is coverage then rather get it from a reseller and not directly from WBS]...

As to your original question:

if there is anyone using it in the Glen of Faerie, then you might want to see some pings & perhaps even tracert's to destinations of your choosing...

About getting ADSL - there is a huge waiting list & it can take ages to get "installed" & isn't available everywhere...

If you need something that will be more UP than DOWN, go with ADSL. There's no reason to avoid the monopoly beast. They controll all the bandwidth, and they control it well.

ADSL is stable, and usable for business purposes.

iBurst is not.

Also keep in mind they're releasing 1mb ADSL. Although it might be expensive and they're riding us for all it's worth, I found VPN to be the sweetest EVER on ADSL. It worked perfectly when iBurst was working for me (before their cap and the official launch)

But ye.... IMHO it's best to go with ADSL

1) the waiting period for ADSL may put you off
2) Faerie Glen is not currently serviced by iBurst

hehe, MyWi is working in FaerieGlen If they can run F1 with 6 cars in the States, I'm sure he'll manage with 128K "broadband"

Hi Techworker,

I had a quick look at the coverage maps an the news is not good

See Pretoria East IBurst Coverage

Reason is that this area is pretty hilly so you may or may not get a signel. The Antenna appears to be at the CSIR which is not really the highest point around for PTA-East.

As much as I hate to say this, your best bet would be to use Telkom ADSL.
