What is performance like using boot-camp or parallels? I know Apples tag lines, etc. but real world data manipulation/analysis speeds and lags? Any real annoyances?

I am thinking of using boot camp to start with and if that gets annoying go to parallels for convenience.

Well bootcamp is native so performance is identical or at least should be. You do take a slight hit when it comes to virtualization but that may have been reduced with ver 3. The good thing is you can share the same installation of xp across both.

I'm hoping Linux apps will work this way too. I have no need for any specific windows apps (only the bios flash tool for my HP - irrelivant on any other hardware), but there are a few of my day-to-day Linux apps that I sorely miss on OSX.

To my inexperienced eye Ubuntu seemed to work really well in parallels.
 
I meant the unity stuff. I would love to have some Linux apps run the way they're doing those windows apps, so that it appears to run outside of the VM. Hmm, bad idea - data would still have to be inside the VM or on a share.

Maybe I should just learn to code so that I can port my fav apps to run natively under OSX :p

Parallels has had that for a while - they call it coherence mode.

Nothing like Virtual PC though I hope. That was painful. :p

I hope I can use my old HP install disk for XP to load it on. ;)

Ver 2 seems pretty fast to me and they've added 3d graphic support in ver3 iirc. I'm not going to upgrade at this time but if I didnt have it I would prob spend the money on it.
 
There's a huge difference between Virtual PC (as in before MS bought it) and Parallels/VMware. Virtual PC emulated x86 hardware on a PPC system. It is not virtualisation, it is emulation. Much much slower.

Parallels/VMware only work if the OS you run inside it expect the same hardware as you are actually running on. VMware has been doing that for ages and was usable even on Celerons of old.
 
They should but I doubt it. Check at your local reseller though. On second thought, I believe it only Apple that gives discount so the resellers here wouldn't b able to offer it from Apple.

I have used my college ID card years after graduation to get discounts on products in the US Apple Stores. Their checks are not very strict. ;)
