I noticed that a friend who uses iafrica mailbox was using smtp.telkomsa.net (or smtp.saix.net) as his smtp address. He did not set up a telkomsa user id & password for authentication.

Does this mean that the Telkom smtp servers are open for spam sending?

Well, I don't know about that way round, but I can tell you that we can all send mail via smtp.mweb.co.za en smtp.iafrica.com and all the others. Why? Because telkom actually reroutes those requests to their own smtp servers:
telnet smtp.mweb.co.za: 220 ctb-mesg6.saix.net ESMTP Postfix
See.
Thats why you can't deliver mail directly to a Mweb user without it first passing through Saix's SMTP server.
Anyhow, I think MWEB might be doing the same, you THINK you're actually connected to their SMTP server, when you're actually still with Saix.
